PROS

The UV-lamp in this zapper is powerful enough to serve as an actual light source, especially since the warm blue illumination blends easily with other lamps.

CONS

Relatively high energy consumption.

OUR VERDICT

The Flowtron BK-80D covers a huge area and zaps any bugs that come way too close, offering protection to you and your backyard. It also provides pretty strong illumination and won't rust even if you leave it out in the spring showers. Great bug destroyer for your yard.

The device is noiseless when it's on so you can place it right by your chair and it won't disrupt your relaxation.

CONS

The replacement UV-lamps are pretty tough to find.

OUR VERDICT

If you're not a fan of nasty zapping sounds that most models make, you will like the Hoont H940 which enjoys a fan to trap and kill bugs and thus works whisper-quietly. The H940 is also floor-standing, so it won't fall and break like models with weak hooks do. While the coverage area could have been wider, it's still a solid choice if you need an effective short-distance zapper.

Polycarbonate is a much more rugged material and its weatherproof properties are simply superb. It doesn't crack nor does it rust or fade under the effects of heat, sunlight, snow, and rain. The product can also be used simply as a decorative lantern or as an additional security lighting.

CONS

The power cable is a bit short.

OUR VERDICT

The Flowtron BK-40D could definitely be described as a good bug zapper if for no other reason than the model's durable and rugged housing. The weather outside won't always be forgiving, but it doesn't concern the zapper from Flowtron as it will be able to handle it all.

Flowtron BK-80D

Extra Powerful Bug Destroyer

We feel that all good appliances should have some sort of multifunctionality to them and that’s one of the reasons we like the Flowtron BK-80D. This powerful outdoor fly zapper can also serve as a pretty bright light source. The 80 W UV-light inside the metal cage gives off warm blue illumination, which blends easily with other light sources.

Of course, that’s not all there is to like about the Flowtron zapper as the device also covers up to 1.5 acres, more than the size of a football field. We doubt that your backyard is that big but better safe than sorry, right?

There’s one downside to the Flowtron BK-80D being super-powerful, namely its energy consumption. It makes sense that a coverage area this big and a light that bright would eat up more than an average lamp does. In the big scheme of things, your electricity bill won’t increase that much while the bug population around your home will dwindle drastically.

You can also run this zapper in any weather as it’s made of polycarbonate which is fully resistant to the elements. The metal cage won’t rust and the plastic won’t get deformed even if you leave the zapper outside for a while.

It’s tough to find a better UV-light zapper than the Flowtron BK-80D as long as you don’t mind a slightly higher electricity bill. The lamp is powerful, covers a large area, and leaves no bugs standing. Or, rather, flying.

Hoont H940

Stands and Delivers!

While many outdoor moth zappers do their job just fine, they all have a common design choice that may not be to everyone’s liking. We’re talking about the fact that most zappers have to be hung or mounted on a wall, which restricts placement options and leaves the device in danger of falling and breaking. So we’re pretty glad to see the Hoont H940, a floor-standing model that does the job just as well and can be tucked into a corner easily.

The zapper is also remarkably quiet and you won’t be distracted by buzzing that most models tend to emit during operation. One of the secrets to the silent operation of the Hoont H940 trap is that it uses a powerful yet noiseless fan to suck up any bugs that may come too close instead of frying them on the light. This makes the device safe to use indoors unlike the regular electric traps, though it does limit the effective range to only 0.02 acres.

A rare disadvantage of this well-rounded zapper lies in the fact that replacement lamps for this model are tough to find and the original one will burn out sooner or later. However, this model’s lamp still has a longer life thanks to the fact that it doesn’t get covered in dead insects and is only used as a lure.

All in all, the Hoont H940 is a great choice if you want a personal outdoor mosquito zapper that will keep the area around you free of bugs. It won’t emit annoying noises as it dispatches insects quietly and swiftly.

Flowtron BK-40D

The Weather Doesn't Stand a Chance

The biggest selling point of the Flowtron BK-40D is the housing's material. Where most manufacturers rely on plastic, the people behind this product decided to go with polycarbonate instead. And, sure, the material in question is generally a bit more expensive than ABS plastic, but it is also much more rugged and its weatherproof properties are simply superb. It doesn't crack nor does it rust or fade under the effects of heat, sunlight, snow, and rain, so the bug zapper will be able to faithfully serve you for years to come.

Materials aside, there's also the coverage area that makes this zapper such an attractive choice for a variety of customers. Being able to cover up to 1 acre of property, the model will prove to be a great solution for people with a large backyard. In terms of performance, it relies on the same working principle that employs the services of UV light and an electrified grid. And when it comes to maintenance, aside from the aforementioned durability of the housing, there's also the fact that the light bulb is really easy to replace without any additional tools. Finally, you could also make an argument that the product can be used simply as a decorative lantern or as an additional security lighting.

All things considered, the Flowtron BK-40D could definitely be described as the best outdoor bug zapper if for no other reason than the model's durable and rugged housing. The weather outside won't always be forgiving, but it doesn't concern the zapper from Flowtron as it will be able to handle it all.

Black Flag BZ-15

Feel Comfortable on a Patio

Normally, mosquitoes and moths are most active at night. Therefore, if you like to spend time outdoors on a patio alone or with your friends, you should definitely use an electric bug zapper and ensure that your pastime is enjoyable. The Black Flag BZ-15 bug zapper has proved its effectiveness in killing flying insects almost in an instant making no harm to people around. The principle of work here involves not only standard UV light but also a special octenol lure attractant coming together with a 30-day cartridge which boosts the effectiveness of UV light by times, attracting more insects in a shorter time. The attractant, though, requires replacing under intensive use, so, maybe, you'd like to stock up on some in advance. In general, summing up all the said above, the Black Flag BZ-15 bug zapper can be safely recommended for outdoor use to all those who seek an effective insect control device and strive for the utmost comfort.

Stinger BKC90

Portable Bug Killer

It’s not easy to keep moths away outside even with lights luring the bugs away from you. If you really want to get rid of annoying insects, you might just have to take advantage of the Stinger BKC90 zapper.

This model has a built-in hook that simplifies its placement. You can mount the zapper on the ceiling or hang it on a tree or a special wall socket. Moreover, the hook is made of rustproof metal and thus won’t be affected by the elements. Leave the zapper outside as long as you want, the device won’t be damaged at all.

One thing about the Stinger BKC90 that we did find a bit disappointing is the pretty low coverage area. While you don’t necessarily need the zapper to lure bugs from all over the neighborhood, the 0.01-acre radius isn’t that impressive and it depends wholly on the octenol lure, which isn’t used to its full potential as it’s stuffed inside the insect tray.

We do, however, love the fact that the Stinger zapper works on a rechargeable battery, which makes it completely wireless. Thanks to that, you can take the Stinger BKC90 with you when you go camping or drive out to a cabin in the woods. One charge is enough for up to 3.5 hours, a whole evening of bug-free relaxation in nature!

In the end, the Stinger BKC90 may not be the most powerful among the other zappers but it’s certainly efficient and one of the few models that’ll be useful out in the wild. Perfect choice for happy campers!

What Is an Outdoor Bug Zapper?

The war between people just wanting to relax and annoying bugs stinging them or fluttering around and bothering everyone has been going on for a long time. It's gotten to the point where people are ranking the most annoying bugs! While you can rest safely in the comfort of your own home with repellers and mosquito nets fitted on the windows, the outside world is still very much controlled by nasty mosquitoes, moths, and flies. Thankfully, you don’t have to limit your diet or choices of clothing and spend your evening out on the patio trying to shoo away nasty bugs as a simple outdoor bug zapper light will take care of most insects without you even lifting a finger!

These lights attract insects of all kinds, luring them in close before zapping them with electricity. Sure, not the most humane way of dealing with the creatures but what are a couple of mosquitoes compared to the chance to spend a nice summer evening in your backyard with a couple of friends? If you're determined to solve things peacefully, you could try and deter bugs by putting certain plants in your backyard.

After you’ve protected your yard from the buzzing insects, don’t forget to safeguard your home with an ultrasonic pest repeller. And try to keep a can of bug spray on you when you go out as, let’s be honest, you’re not gonna lug around an outdoor zapper when you go for a night out or a long vacation.
