What customers say about "Key Specs"

Samsung SE-218CB/RSBS Ultra Portable External DVD Writer
  • Good read speed. I have used it to install several operating systems on laptops, and performance is comparable to a dedicated internal drive.
  • It is quiet and burns DVD at a fast speed and seems to be exactly what I needed.
  • Best rip speed I saw was just over 20x - although the average including compression time was between 6 and 7 x. Power consumption seems modest. Unit seems solid and well built.
  • This drive is slim and stylish. It runs in reasonable speed. And it evedn works with my Asus netbook which doesn't have much virtual memory.
  • My only complaint is CD read speed seems slower than my other drives. I frequently use data CDs and DVDs for work, and the copy speed compared to my previous disk player seems slower.

What customers say about "Details"

Samsung SE-218CB/RSBS Ultra Portable External DVD Writer
  • The feature that steered me toward this model is that the USB cable provides the power –no extra cables and plugs. Data transfer for this model is appreciable, complimentary to the speeds of USB 3.
  • Basically zero-install on Windows 7 and Mac OS X 10.9. Just plug it in and use it.
  • I tested this on Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Mac OS X Mavericks. I have yet to find a need to test it on Linux but I'm confident that it will work because other kind reviewers have mentioned that it works with Linux out of the box, just like it does with Windows and Mac.
  • I also like the slide out tray because my cd collection is chock full of 3" mini discs that were popular maybe 15 years ago
  • Comes with USB cable as well as some basic burning software. It's nothing special, along the lines of what you could grab for free online, but it's convenient and a nice addition
  • I feel like I have to support the bottom of the tray when I snap the disk to avoid damaging the tray over time.

What customers say about "Reading/writing"

Samsung SE-218CB/RSBS Ultra Portable External DVD Writer
  • I have used it both to write and read CDs on my laptop (which does not have its own built in CD drive) and each time it has done so as expected.
  • It reads, it burns, it lets me watch Lethal Weapon on my lunch break.
  • Reads and writes CDs and DVDs. No complaints. I like the Samsung name because I believe that generally speaking they spend a little more time on quality control. So far, so good.
  • My only complaint is that it is slow, but this is attributed to the fact that it is single-USB compatible and therefore receiving less power than a drive connected to an outlet or two USB ports at once.
  • I was creating ISO files from some of our old mini DVDs that our old camcorder had burned. I'm not sure what the problem was, but the drives on our desktop would not read some of them. It would just say the disc is blank or unreadable.
