Read & Write speed is average among this price range.
I works very well and is much faster than any normal DVD recorder because it is designed for high speed recording for back-up!
Just plug n play, did not load any software. Write/read speed good.
It is not as quiet as some external drives are. Its write speed of 8X is not as fast as some internal or external drives.
Not a speed demon (6X max DVD -R burn) but it was plug and play on a new iMac running OSX 10.11.3.

LG GP60NB50 Super Multi Ultra Slim Portable DVD Rewriter External Drive

This thing has a faster write and read speed, a smaller form factor, and a far better price than Apple's external drive.
Very small and lightweight, works perfectly at the advertised speed. Much cheaper than the old days as well.
The read speed on this drive may well be 8x. This is a great external dvd player/recorder.
This is a great buy! The speed and convenience of this thing amazing.
It does use only a 2.0 usb and can only write to 8x speed, which is perfectly fine to me given the affordable price point.

It is decently built. Made of plastic, while somewhat sturdy, still it will break if dropped. So handle with care.
It works with Windows 7, 8, & 8.1 out of the box. You do not need to install separate driver.
You can also connect the drive to your TV - provided that your TV has USB port.
Haven't had a single problem. It's quiet, small and simply does what you need.
It's very lightweight and portable but also sturdy. This is a great little drive. I use it with both my PC and my Macs.

This unit is plug and play, meaning no setup is required. This will work on a Mac.
It is wonderful for travel, I would guess it's about 1/4 LB. It's amazing!
It is pretty slim and portable, so it is easy to carry around.
Set-up was quick and painless: plug-in to pc, wait for pc to read it, insert software cd, wait for software to download, and your done!
The usb cord is short - about 6 inches. You have to put the disc player pretty much near the computer.

You can read/write M-Discs. This is a great advantage of this drive. M-Discs can store your files (docs, pictures, & movies) for 1000 years.
Great unit works perfectly. Good quality, speed is ok. Portable in the appropriate bag.
It very nice. Slim enough to carry around easily with a correct protective case. Nice writing and reading speed.
I've used to to read and write both CDs and DVDs on my Lenovo and Dell laptops and it's worked great.
Drive with M-DISC Support, Retail (Black) GP50NB40. It was a great purchase! You just plug it in and do what you need to do. It's lightweight and very portable.

Not all DVD drives will work with M-Discs (the archival long-life discs), but this is one that works well.
It has a very good cd burn speed. Plays DVDs really well.
Excellent combination of price, speed, and convenience.
Connected easily via USB and I was immediately making DVDs. Fast burning speed without compromising quality.
I returned it after watching one and a half movies ~ constantly whirring loudly and varying speeds, often would cut out and we had to restart the movie from the beginning, very frustrating.
