What Is It

Probably, every one of us has a lot of digital devices at our home or office. They connect our lives together and provide the means to work and relax. And yet, it's easy to get puzzled with the sheer number of cables they come with. So if you've ever struggled with switching HDMI cables from an STB, game console or PC to one TV screen, then these HDMI transmitters are the best solution.

For starters, splitter-type transmitters grab a signal and duplicate it. After that, the twin signals from the splitter go to the several displaying devices simultaneously. HDMI switches, on the contrary, can transfer the signal from one or more devices to only one screen.

Obviously, there are many types of such devices with their unique features on the market nowadays. That's why we came up with the idea to find out the best HDMI switches and splitters for all the typical situations that you may encounter while connecting all your HDMI-wired devices at your home or office. So check out this review and choose the best suitable one for your needs.

And if you are looking for other PC hardware, take a sneak peek at our USB Hubs and Memory Card Readers.

What Features to Compare

First of all, make sure you know exactly the kind of HDMI transmitter's Functionality you require. Once again, splitters are designed to take an incoming signal, duplicate it and send out to 2 or more displays. Switches are used for connecting many devices to one monitor or TV screen in order not to plug them in and out each time. And if you want the qualities of both, then get an HDMI matrix (like JTD-HD-4X2-HIFI) – it can transfer the signal from many devices to one or more screens.

And sometimes it's easy to forget how many things we have in our houses. So count up devices with HDMI cables that you have, check out HDMI versions that they work with (you can find this info in the manuals), and then choose the transmitter with Port Specs that will satisfy your needs. Please note, that every HDMI version supports the characteristics of a previous one.

There is still a couple of pitfalls you’d want to avoid here. Some devices may not be compatible due to the HDMI version differences. Helpfully, that info can also be found in the manuals. So don't forget to compare the Supported Formats. And Controls are the last but not the least important thing to check out. The switches and splitters may come with wireless IR remote that can come handy if you are going to put the device far from hand’s reach, while others may only have a control button right on the body.

Finally, let's take a closer look at each device and its features.

Review of J-Tech Digital HDMI 4x2 HIFI Matrix Version 1.3

J-Tech Digital HDMI 4x2 HIFI Matrix Version 1.3

J-Tech Digital HDMI 4x2 HIFI Matrix Version 1.3

Functionality

J-Tech Digital JTD-HD4X2-HIFI is a smart combination of HDMI splitter and a switch. It supports inputs from 1 to 4 devices and outputs video signal to one or two screens, such as computer monitor, TV screen or projector. Furthermore, two output signals can be from the same or different sources simultaneously. This all-in-one HDMI matrix has an immense amount of applications and is a formidable device for home and business daily use. This model turned out to be the best choice in a class of its own.

Ports Specs

All input and output ports of this matrix are marked and can be used with Blu-ray player, STB, game console, TV screen, projector and others. Two outputs allow you to plug-in and get one signal to two different screens at once. There are also separate optical SPDIF and 3.5mm audio ports next to one of HDMI outputs. The first one is helpful for getting clear sound for your audio system either with optic fiber or coaxial cable, while the second one is a standard one for stereo speakers or headphones. The HDMI AWG24 works with input cables at up to 50 ft and up to 100 ft output cables. Still, the shorter the cable is, the more lossless signal you'll get. DC 5V adapter also comes in a package to power-up this matrix.

Supported Formats and Controls

J-Tech Digital JTD-HD4X2-HIFI Matrix supports 1080p. If your screen supports 3D as well, you can freely use this device too. Video transferring works well with different color spaces – xvYCC, Deep color 24bit, 30bit, 36bit, and provides a vibrant picture to the receiver. The matrix maintains transferring unchanged video from Blu-ray or PC with 24/50/60 fps as well as encoded audio formats, such as DTS, DSD, DTS-HD, LPCM 7.1, Dolby-AC3 and Dolby-TrueHD, without any interference. Even more, it can safely retransmit HDCP-encrypted signal from digitally protected Blu-ray discs, HD DVD or other sources. You can fully control switching between inputs with an IR remote and also check the signal activity by looking at the red indicators on the front side of the box.

Review of Kinivo 501BN 5 port HDMI switch

Kinivo 501BN 5 port HDMI switch

Kinivo 501BN 5 port HDMI switch

Functionality

If you are looking for a device to wire up all of your devices with HDMI cables to one monitor, Kinivo 501BN is the one you need. It is a 5-to-1 HDMI switch that can retransfer the signal from different sources to one TV, PC monitor or projector. It comes in a body so compact that the 5th input is on the side panel right next to the power supply port. With the help of this gadget, people may finally be able to sort out some of the tangled mess that usually accompanies office hardware. Nuff said!

Ports Specs

Kinivo 501BN switch has one of the biggest number of inputs among its competitors. There are 5 input slots for HDMI cables and 1 output to connect them to the receiver. All of the ports support HDMI version 1.4, which makes this switch fully compatible with most of the modern equipment with HDMI output. There are totally 7 marked ports on the rear and flank sides of the device: 1 for AC power supply (adapter included), 5 for input and 1 for output.

Supported Formats and Controls

Kinivo 501BN switch supports all of the standard HD resolutions up to 1080p and also supports 3D. Speaking about the picture quality, by using the standard HDMI cables, colors, sharpness, and contrast look unchanged, just as expected. An IR remote will surely be handy if you are going to use it with projector or TV. The switch also has a useful function: it detects the active source and automatically switches to it if the other 4 are inactive. Otherwise, you can still manually change the signal channel with a button on the front side of the device.

Review of Fosmon HD1831 3-Port 4k HDMI Switch

Fosmon HD1831 3-Port 4k HDMI Switch

Fosmon HD1831 3-Port 4k HDMI Switch

Functionality

Fosmon HD1831 is a dark horse among others. It’s a switch that can transfer the signal from 3 different sources to one receiver, like monitor or projector if they have at least 1 HDMI port. It was tested with PS4, PC, and a Blu-ray reader to see both action sequences with fastly changing scenery and static images like photos or powerpoint presentations. And we simply didn’t expect to see such a formidable results from such a low-priced switch. On the surface, it looks like a half-disk with 3 HDMI inputs at the ‘cut’ side (see the pic). It has one built-in pigtail cable for output and, overall, is a great solution for arranging the cables behind your TV.

Ports Specs

Fosmon HD1831 Switch has 3 input HDMI ports, meaning, you can simultaneously connect up to 3 digital devices. It did just okay with video of all the formats. Some customers had some worries about it having built-in output cable, however, it’s the kind of the device that you plug-in and leave alone. And 24K gold-plated connector looks pretty reliable and is likely to serve longer than usual cables.

Supported Formats and Controls

It supports video resolution up to 1080p with 12bit Deep color per channel and also 3D. It did just fine with common audio standard formats: DTS Digital, Dolby Digital, DTS-HS, Dolby TrueHD, and uncompressed audio formats, such as LPCM. It works with HDCP 1.2, therefore, pay attention that it might not support the devices that require HDCP 2.2 or higher. One-button-operation allows you to manually select the input port. Another cool feature is that it requires no additional power supply. It only detects the signal with power supply and switches to it. One less cable at your home. Finally, three LED lights near the button show you which input is active at the moment. Overall, this Fosmon HDMI Switch showed great test results and can be recommended right off the bat.

Review of Zettaguard 4x1 ZW410 4k HDMI Switch

Zettaguard 4x1 ZW410 4k HDMI Switch

Zettaguard 4x1 ZW410 4k HDMI Switch

Functionality

With Zettaguard ZW410 HDMI switch box, you can transfer the signal from different electronic devices to one TV screen, projector monitor or, in case of audio signal only, to an audio system. Zettaguard Switcher hub is great if you have a lot of game consoles, STBs, disc players or other similar devices, but only one huge screen. You can freely switch between input cables to get the corresponding signal. But there’s more to it than meets the eye. It has a PIP function (Picture in Picture). With PIP, you can check out the video from other channels in a small sub-screens that are rendered over the image of your main channel. For example, you can simultaneously play a fullscreen video game from your PS4 while waiting for a TV commercial to end, and also catch a glimpse of new skype messages from your PC.

Ports Specs

Zettaguard ZW410 has a comparatively medium price but boasts high functionality. The switch has 4 inputs for your Blu-ray player, game consoles or TV, and 1 output to connect it to a screen. All of them along with DC 5V power supply slot are on the same rear side of the switch body. Speaking of a power supply, it comes with a USB power cord and an adapter for a socket. That way you can have one more free wall socket if you just plug it into your PC or even a screen if it has USB port. It was tested with 1.5 and 6 ft. high-speed HDMI cables with different devices and performed without a hitch.

Supported Formats and Controls

Zettaguard switch works HDMI version 1.4, which makes it compatible with most up-to-date devices. It can pass through video at high resolutions, such as 4K x 2K at 30Hz, 1080p at 120Hz or 3D 1080p at 60 Hz. The transferred picture appears just the same with no changes in brightness or color. ZW410 Switch supports Deep color video at 30bit, 36bit, 48bit, as well as most audio formats, such as DSD, DTS-HD, LPCM 7.1, Dolby AC-3 and Dolby TrueHD. That means you get to enjoy the full audio and color spectrum without noticeable interference. The switching between inputs is performed via pressing the button on the front side of switch box or via IR wireless remote. However, PIP function can be accessed only with the remote. The controls are pretty straightforward and don’t require additional configurations. And different color indicators show which HDMI input is currently active and displayed.
