Apple AirPods Pro

Raising the Bar

Unless you were living under a rock for the last few years, the Apple AirPods Pro require no introductions. Pretty much everything about these earbuds is a cut above the competition, except that the company's trademark all-white case is easily scratched. Aside from that, these are tremendous 'pods.

The active noise-canceling tech works wonders cutting down on noise coming from both inside and outside the ears. When you want a little outside noise penetrating the earbuds though, you can always switch to the Transparency mode, enabling you to interact with the surrounding world without removing the 'buds. As always, Apple's custom drivers make sure these truly wireless earbuds sound fantastic, with the HDR amplifiers ensuring great instrumental separation and, rolling off the highs, preventing the music from sounding harsh.

We can talk about the speech-detecting accelerometer. We can talk about the adaptive EQ automatically tuning the music based on the ears' shape. We can even mention the vent system that enables comfortable pressure equalization so that you can wear these earbuds for hours without experiencing any discomfort.

From the dual beamforming microphone to the hassle-free controls that let you double-tap to play or skip forward tracks, with the Apple AirPods Pro, you know what you're paying for and it isn't the Apple name alone.

Samsung Galaxy Buds+

The 'Buds to Beat

The Samsung Galaxy Buds+ are excellent at isolating you from distracting outside noises, enabling you to remain focused on the audio source. Of course, not unlike most high-end true wireless earbuds, these black 'buds also let you switch between noise-canceling and Ambient Awareness modes, with the second mode preventing you from missing oncoming traffic, flight announcements, and so on. These are not the features that set these buds apart though. No, the features that set them apart is the ridiculous battery life and the drivers.

While most true wireless models give you somewhere around 4-5 hours of play time, these ones can last 11 hours on a single charge, which is pretty insane. In other words, you will be able to survive even the longest flights without recharging your earbuds.

The AKG drivers are no joke too though, producing premium sound with a high dynamic range and equally high sound accuracy, primarily thanks to the subs and tweeters inside both 'buds.

The trade-off here is the model's poor sweat resistance, making them not necessarily the best option for running. So, assuming that you're not looking for workout earbuds, the Samsung Galaxy Buds+ are the true wireless earbuds to beat.

Anker Soundcore Liberty Neo

Bass Up

The Anker Soundcore Liberty Neo could have used a less pretentious name. They're not bad earbuds, not one bit. Having said that, they're also not as excellent as the name somewhat suggests. On the one hand, the graphene drivers here are nothing to sneeze at, oscillating with uncompromising precision so that the music is reproduced with honest space perception, clarity, and above-average stereo accuracy. On the other hand, the 'buds last less than 4 hours, which is not terrible but also not great.

While the BassUp tech deserves considerable praise, analyzing the low frequencies and increasing the bass output by ~40% without delay, the tips deserve some criticism, as difficult to replace as they are.

Despite the advantages, again, these are solid earbuds and maybe the best workout wireless 'buds. With the SweatGuard system securing an IPX5 protection class, they're sealed and protected from sweat and even considerable downpours, let alone occasional splashes.

Last but not least, the GripFit tech keeps the fit comfortable yet tight, so you can train as hard as you want without worrying about the 'buds falling out.

In short, as much as we dislike the name, these affordable cordless 'buds are difficult to dislike, especially considering that they can easily compete with much more expensive models.

What customers say about this product

Key Specs

The sound quality is pretty good, nothing spectacular, but definitely not bad.

Size & Weight

Compact size of the ear buds/ very low profile / light in weight.

Features

Initial pairing was easy, and they connect to my iPhone automatically every time I take them out of the case.

Power

Battery life is surprisingly long, I haven’t even able to drain them yet despite several hour long listening sessions.

Xiaomi (TWSEJ04LS) Redmi Airdot

The Most Affordable

The Xiaomi TWSEJ04LS, also known as the Xiaomi Redmi Airdot, are basically dirt-cheap. Because the 'buds cost around 20 bucks, they don't sound as great as true wireless models that cost above 150 bucks, which is not surprising. Still, considering the price tag, they're impressive 'buds, we can tell you that much. The battery inside them lasts 4 hours and the charging case will give you around 12, which is not bad at all. Even though you'll seldom be able to squeeze out these exact numbers, the 'buds will last more than you can expect from something that costs ~20 bucks.

In the meantime, the integrated mic will be putting its DSP noise-cancellation tech to good use, enabling you to communicate hands-free without the ambient noise making the call less pleasant than it should be. On the controls' front, the multi-function physical buttons on these 'buds will be reducing false touches and also enabling voice control when necessary (all you have to do is double-click them).

Apart from everything else, they're also sweat-resistant, with the enclosure reaching an IPX4 protection class and protecting them from sweat and splashes. So, as long as you're fine with the middling sound, these true wireless earbuds from Xiaomi should prove to be right up your alley.

AIBOONDEE TW60

Crisp Highs and 100% Waterproof

The AIBOONDEE TW60 (an excellent company name, of course) costs less than 20 bucks. Despite that, these 'buds do not sound bad. No, featuring high-res audio decoders and embedded 6.2mm composite membrane drivers, these wireless earbuds are able to provide deep bass and crisp highs. What's even more surprising (and impressive) when you take the price into account is that they're 100% waterproof, with the enclosure boasting an IPX7 protection class, meaning that the 'buds can easily survive long-lasting submersion.

Of course, flawless wireless earbuds at less than 20 bucks is not realistic, so there are certain issues that should be addressed with upcoming models. First, the microphone is not great and could use at least some basic noise-canceling tech. Second, the charging case will not give you more than 8 hours, even though there are true wireless models that cost around as much that can give you around 12 hours. On the bright side, ditching traditional physical buttons, these 'buds come equipped with touch controls, making then even more petite.

Bottom line, the AIBOONDEE TW60 provides more than any reasonable person can expect while paying less than 20 bucks. To add more, the earbuds even support voice control.

What Are True Wireless Earbuds?

Now, you probably know wireless headphones and earbuds to be something that connects to your player or smartphone via Bluetooth and therefore has no wires to hang from your ears to your pocketed device. The earbuds still had a cord that connected the buds, though. That’s the extent of wireless we’ve known for some years already.

True wireless earbuds are basically just two separate earbuds, there is no cord connecting them to each other. You just push them up your ear canals like your usual buds and go. Nothing slaps you on the back of your neck, nothing tangles in your hair. It’s utterly convenient. More often than not, they're compatible with both Android models and iPhones.

At the same time, besides enhanced convenience—no tangling wires, nothing getting in your way and hindering your movements—these more up-to-date earbuds offer better sound quality, and that’s something that was often a major issue with any wireless audio devices. It is yet to reach the level of a good CD player, of course, but it is already better than what everybody has gotten used to. Basically, true wireless earbuds are a new step in portable audio technology where the pros overpower any cons for most users. Try them for yourself!
