PROS

Using the proprietary application, you will be able to remotely monitor and control the mower. Through an onboard GPS system, the model is able to create a map of the garden. That map will include the boundary and guide wires' location. Then, the mower registers which garden parts it has covered and is able to adjust its mowing pattern according to that data.

CONS

It is easy to compromise the pegs on shallow, rocky soil.

OUR VERDICT

The Husqvarna Automower 315X isn't cheap. But this is arguably the best robotic lawn mower that money can buy. Its construction is a cut above the model's competition. Its lawn coverage and cutting results are practically unrivaled. All in all, this is about as complete of a package as they come.

Husqvarna Automower 315X

Complete Remote Control

Robotic lawn mowers don't always compare that well to a regular mower with a person behind it but the Husqvarna Automower 315X gets pretty darn close. There's a lot that contributes to the model's overall excellence but we would like to begin with Automower® Connect.

Using this application, you will be able to remotely monitor and control the mower. It will let you follow the machine, tinker with the settings, view the lawn map as well as do many different things from your smartphone.

You'll be able to send start, stop, and park commands. You can set up different alarms. There's practically nothing that you won't be able to do remotely with the mower.

But how good is it at the actual mowing part? Well, it is definitely up there with the best robotic devices, we can tell you that much. Using an onboard GPS system, the model is able to create a map of the garden. That map will include the boundary and guide wires' location.

After that, the Husqvarna mower registers which garden parts it has covered and is able to adjust its mowing pattern according to that data. This way, the model makes it possible to ensure optimized lawn coverage and the best cutting results.

Review of Husqvarna Automower 315X Robotic Lawn Mower

The Most Complete Package

Sometimes, it is as much about the smaller things as it is about the seemingly bigger parts. For instance, it is hard to tell that the LED lights are as important as the previous components. However, these energy-efficient headlights are able to deliver outstanding visibility and great control in the dark. Plus, if/when a malfunction occurs, the lights will start flashing to immediately notify the user.

The build can never be irrelevant. Here, it is very much the model's construction that allows it to tackle different obstacles, tight spaces, and slopes without breaking a proverbial sweat.

A good example of that would be the large coarse-tread wheels that provide superior traction even when the surface is really slippery. Thanks to these wheels, the mower is perfectly capable of handling slopes up to 40%.

What's more, the model is about as weather-resistant as they come, so it works just as well in the rain.

There's a lot to cover here. We could talk about the feature that automatically detects imbalances in the system to allow silent and trouble-free operation. We could mention the rubber-made front bumper that allows the machine to face recurrent collisions with trees, shrubs, and other similar objects within the installation.

But what we have highlighted already is enough to make our point. The point being that the Husqvarna Automower 315X isn't cheap, we understand that. But this is arguably the best robotic lawn mower that money can buy. Its construction is a cut above the model's competition. Its lawn coverage and cutting results are practically unrivaled. All in all, this is about as complete of a package as they come.

McCulloch ROB 1000

A Silent Robot

The McCulloch ROB 1000 is a pretty solid model that has quite a lot going for it. It doesn't lose to any model in its price category in terms of performance, all of the necessary features are there, and the price is more than fair. But if we had to point out the best thing about it, it would probably have to be the fact that this machine is virtually silent. The majority of robotic mowers produce a fair share of noise which can disturb the people around you as well as prevent you from enjoying a nice quiet lazy Sunday afternoon. That isn't the case with ROB 1000. On the contrary, the model produces so little noise that you can even use it at night without having to deal with complaints from your neighbors. And while we're still on the subject of noise, this remote lawn mower comes equipped with an audible alarm that will protect it from theft.

With that out of the way, it is time to talk about performance. Performance-wise, it certainly isn't the most powerful option on the market but it gets the job done. And given how much the people behind this product are charging for it, what the model is capable of delivering is actually quite impressive. It offers 65 minutes of runtime and it takes the mower only about 50 minutes to fully recharge. That should be enough to cover up to a quarter of an acre, meaning it will be able to handle your average lawn with effortless ease.

Review of McCulloch ROB 1000 Programmable Robotic Lawn Mower

The Ability to Adapt

Now that we have already mentioned the alarm, we thought it wouldn't hurt to talk about a few other features that this model comes equipped with. First off, we didn't say that bit about using this mower at night just for the sake of it. Since this model is fully programmable, you can tell it exactly how and when you want the robot to mow your lawn. Of course, we already said enough about when and, as for the how, this robotic assistant was created with the ability to adapt to a number of different surfaces, implementing a solution that cuts the grass in an irregular pattern, thus leaving your lawn looking clean and pristine, without uneven areas or track line markers.

In case you feel like the alarm wouldn't be enough to protect this little investment, the manufacturers also made sure to equip this robotic lawn mower with a PIN code so that nobody would be able to access it but you and the people that you shared the code with. To somewhat rephrase our earlier point, the McCulloch ROB 1000 will prove to be a pretty good fit for your average customer as it is one of the cheaper options on the market despite the fact that it offers solid performance and all of the necessary features are there.

WORX WG794

Govern the Lawn

The price of robotic lawn mowers often varies from a thousand to several thousands of dollars. However, the Worx WG794 Landroid turned out to be a functional robot that comes at a considerably lower price than the other models. Its intelligent system is designed to effectively cover the mowing area of up to 1/4 acre (or around 10,800 sq ft). The housing design also allows it to trim the grass on uneven surfaces with the slopes at up to 20°.

Note, the package includes 200 pegs and 590 ft of the wire for setting the boundaries for the robot.

Review of WORX WG794 Landroid Robotic Lawn Mower

Cut and Slice

The cutting blade here has the same design as most Husqvarna robotic mowers. It has the shape of a disc with 3 small pivoting razor blades, attached to it with 1 bolt. When rotating at a high speed, these blades come out and cut almost any type of grass. However, if the blades strike against a stubborn obstacle like a branch or a thick scrub, they will just slide to the side, avoiding damage.

What's more, each blade has 2 holes and sharp edges on both sides. Such design grants much longer service life, as when one side becomes dull, you can just flip it over or attach it to the disc with another side. Also, you can adjust the cutting height manually from 1.6" to 4", leaving the grass length exactly as you need it.

Additionally, the package includes 9 blades in total. Each one stays sharp for about 4 months while being used every day. Thus, you are provided with up to 12 months of daily mowing. Just don't forget to switch them and clean from the dirt and mulched grass.

WORX WG794 Landroid Robotic Lawn Mower in the use

Automated Lawn Mower

The WORX WG794 Landroid offers almost fully automated performance and is equipped with numerous sensors, including the rain one. That way, you can program the schedule and don't have to worry that it will start cutting the grass when it's raining. Thanks to the bumping sensor, there's also no need to set the perimeter wire around the trees, poles, and other objects in the yard. Still, if you have deep pits or shallow flowerbeds in your yard, we strongly recommend running the wire around them to prevent the robot from falling into one.

A single battery charge provides around 40 minutes of active mowing before the robot returns to the base. A full recharge takes only 45 minutes, which is also a great result, compared to many other models on the market.

The bottom line - we can recommend the WORX WG794 Landroid Robotic Lawn Mower with a well-balanced functionality for owners of the average-sized lawns. If you are looking for an inexpensive, quiet-working lawn mowing robot and not afraid of having to switch the blades manually every month or two, we can recommend you this mower.

Robomow RX12

Expecting the Miracle

The Robomow RX12 model is the most expected robotic lawn mower of Spring, 2017. Mostly, because of the incredibly friendly price and rich functionality.

It features a capacious battery that provides from 90 to 120 minutes of a mowing time. It has a single 7" cutting blade with adjustable height from 0.6" to 1.7". Furthermore, the mower can effectively cut the grass at up to 8.5° slopes. It doesn't have a navigation wheel like most of the other models, but it uses its 2 large wheels to push itself around. It also features a floating deck underneath that follows the terrain features.

Review of Robomow RX12 Robotic Lawn Mower

Light and Simple

This Robomow lawn mower is very convenient. Its modular design allows you to quickly detach almost any part for cleaning or changing. Just like any other robotic mowers, it automatically returns to the docking station when the charge is low.

The acid-lead battery allowed to dramatically reduce the price. The payback, though, is that it takes almost a single day to recharge it. For the same reason, its mowing area is only 1/20 of an acre, making this robot suitable for small yards and gardens only.

Anyhow, the built-in sensors allow it to follow even the narrow passages and trim the grass, including the lawn's edges. Speaking of the perimeter, the package also includes a wire and pegs for laying it around your yard.

Robomow RX12 Robotic Lawn Mower in the use

Easy Setup

Well, the Robomow RX15 mowing robot probably has the most simplified controls, that we've seen in such devices. It has one on/off button and another one that just sends it to the base. That's it. No LCD screen, no fancy phone app for schedule programming. Zilch. Nada. You just plug it in, turn it on - and the mower handles your lawn all by itself. Owing to the chaotic mowing pattern, it tends to never go over the same path twice.

Concluding, this inexpensive robotic lawn mower can become an ideal solution for small yards and gardens of up to 2,000 sq ft in size.

Gardena R80Li

Eco-Friendly Assistant

The Gardena R80Li has quite a few tricks up its sleeve in order to attract a number of different customers. First things first, not dissimilar to the majority of mid-range and high-end robotic mowers, the model operates on a rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery. That means zero emissions compared to orthodox lawn mowers that run on gas and far less environmental factor compared to disposable batteries. As you would imagine, that makes the model in question a great choice for environmentally conscious people as it will allow them to reduce their environmental footprint.

The question of environment aside, robotic lawn mowers can be as complicated as the next sophisticated piece of technology, which is why the manufacturers of this one made sure to design a model that is easy to install and just as easy to use and maintain. All you have to do is set up a boundary wire around the edges of your lawn and any large objects and you should be good to go. Speaking of those edges, the model offers about 65 minutes of runtime, which given the average cutting width of 6.69 inches and between 0.8 and 2 inches of cutting height should be enough to handle under 9,000 square feet of land. And if not, it takes the mower about 50 minutes to recharge and go back to the grass cutting task.

Review of Gardena R80Li Robotic Lawn Mower

Improve Your Garden

By the way, we probably would be remiss not to mention the fact that this robotic lawn mower doesn't just cleave a large part of the grass but instead cuts the tips with razor-sharp blades. Since grass clippings remain on the lawn, they serve as a natural fertilizer, thus allowing your grass to grow without any chemical interventions. Other than that, the mower will be able to handle a maximum slope of up to 25% (14°), which should be enough for your average lawn with some uneven terrain here and there. And, again, not dissimilar to the majority of robotic mowers, the model includes chaotic moving patterns and is capable of maintaining several mowing zones.

As for the features, the robotic lawn mower from Gardena comes equipped with both an audible alarm and a PIN code, so you wouldn't have to worry about a jealous neighbor stealing your robot from you. Furthermore, you won't have to hide the model when it starts to get slightly drizzly outside as it can perfectly work during rain. It doesn't produce a whole lot of noise either, so that scoundrel neighbor of yours wouldn't be able to complain about that either. Finally, the mower is fairly programmable and you will be able to set different mowing times and days according to your preferences. In short, we would recommend the Gardena R80Li robotic lawn mower to environmentally conscious folks first and foremost. It also wouldn't disappoint those who are looking for a mower that is simple to operate without being underwhelming in terms of what it can bring to the table.

What Is a Robotic Lawn Mower?

A robot lawn mower is exactly what it sounds like. It's a battery-powered automated robot, that moves around on wheels and trims grass with razor blades on its bottom. Such mowers come with a docking station, used for recharge, and a special perimeter wire for setting the boundaries. Some models also have such features a solar battery on top, which prolongs their working time. Many of them have an option to be programmed with a mowing schedule, and some other features.

Once all of the preparations are complete - the wire is laid, the station is connected to the power supply, the battery is charged, and the mowing schedule is set - the robot lawn mower will not require a human intervention and will work automatically. The cut grass is not collected in a bag, but rather left on the ground as the soil fertilizer, boosting the future grass growth. Thus, you will get a perfectly maintained lawn with healthy green grass without even having to go outside.

On a related note, we can also offer you our pick of the best hedge trimmers for keeping the green fences well-manicured. Also, you might be interested in the smart sprinklers systems, that can be scheduled to irrigate the flower beds and the grass in your yard during the desired time of a day even when you are away.

Best Robotic Lawn Mowers

What Features to Compare

Maximum Coverage. Some mowers are designed to effectively cut lawns of a specific size. Some of them can cover the areas of only 2000 sq ft, while others may patrol as much as over an acre. Thus, if you choose a model with the designated area smaller, than your yard, you might require moving the docking station from one zone to another, which is not exactly convenient.

Perimeter Wire Length. Unlike some robot vacuum cleaners, that can scan the room for possible obstacles beforehand, the mowers rely on the perimeter wire, laid along the borders of your lawn and around some obstacles that you don't want it to hit with its bumpers. Thus, check out beforehand how much wire you will need to cover the necessary area.

Sensors. As a rule, the mowers are equipped with several smart sensors that allow the robot to detect the perimeter wire or turn around when it bumps into an object that it can't push away. Another useful sensor is a rain detector, because the wet grass may clog the rotating blades. Additionally, such device with a lot of metal parts, staying on the flat lawn, may attract the lighting strike. So, when the rain sensor detects high humidity level, it will make the robot return to the docking station.

Programmable Features. A lof of the latest models can be scheduled to mow only during specific time of a day. Some of them may have an option to set the password for controls or configure different behavior scenarios for different situations and also change the mowing patterns. Still, in most cases, the mowers just move in a chaotic pattern by randomly choosing its direction. That way, your lawn will obtain the carpet-like look without the wheel traces on it. There are also models that feature linear and even spiraling mowing patterns.

Lawn Grass Types. Generally, most of the mowers' blades can cut down almost any lawn vegetation like grass or dandelions. Yet, some models may be an exception and struggle to cut high-maintenance types of grass with thick shoots like St Augustine Grass.
