PROS

Vegetable-dyed, the leather here has been tanned without relying upon harsh chemicals, using nothing but tree bark, leaves, and woods. Dyed with these raw materials, the collar boasts a warm tone that looks and feels natural.

CONS

The splayed rivets on the inside are sharp.

OUR VERDICT

Collars made from genuine leather usually look more elegant and expensive but even among these collars very few look as premium as Angel Pet Supplies Inc. Rio Handmade Martingale Collar. Moreover, as far as most dogs are concerned, the collar is as comfortable as it is attractive.

Max and Neo Nylon Martingale Collar is something that the majority of dog owners will benefit from. That being said, those individuals whose four-legged companions are especially spry and energetic will find the collar even more helpful.

OUR VERDICT

Ditching fabrics, Berry Pet Double-Plated Martingale Collar uses stainless steel, with ~0.12-inch rings making the martingale look massive and making sure that even fighting dog breeds cannot break this collar. Plus, it looks pretty cool.

Angel Pet Supplies Inc. Genuine Leather Rio Handmade

The More Premium One

Angel Pet Supplies Inc. Rio Handmade Martingale Collar looks much more premium than most martingales, this is where we'll start. Even the ones that are also made from genuine leather usually have a much less refined appearance to them, but this one's different.

Plus, the model is vegetable-dyed and tanned without using harsh chemicals. Instead, the people behind the product have used leaves, woods, and tree bark to dye this one, giving the leather this rich yet warm tone that looks and feels natural. Furthermore, the model is padded, protecting dogs' necks from rubbing, chafing, and irritations. But, to be 100% transparent, the splayed rivets on the inside are quite sharp, so not every dog will find this collar quite as comfortable as you would expect.

Aside from that, this martingale comes fitted with stainless steel rings and an extra ring that secures a dog tag. Made from high-strength stainless steel, these rings will go the distance, even when exposed to the elements on a semi-consistent basis.

Long story short, Angel Pet Supplies Inc. Rio Handmade Martingale Collar is almost excessive but pampering your four-legged friends feels good, don't you think? So go with this one and you'll unlikely regret the decision.

Mighty Paw Leather with Stainless Steel Chain

The Mightiest and Mildest Paws Alike

Mighty Paw Leather Training Collar fits the mightiest paws. Before that though, just like most martingales, this collar gives the dog cues and feedback, reducing pulling and letting you train even the least agreeable dogs without causing them pain and discomfort. Providing gentle yet controlled correction, the model tightens without choking, so the doggo learns without experiencing especially unpleasant sensations.

Looking at the materials, the collar's made from genuine leather, offering a more pleasant tactile impression than nylon and steel collars. However, the chain here's made from stainless steel, eliminating discoloration as well as maximizing durability. On a less bright side, though the people behind the product are claiming that the leather is premium, the collar bleeds (leaves strong brown marks around the dog's neck). What's less unfortunate is that the above-mentioned chain doubles as a handle, so you can hold the dog in crowded places without choking it.

When all is said and done, Mighty Paw Leather Training Collar makes an excellent impression despite the leather being not quite as premium as the company claims. The collar will facilitate training but also fit trained dogs.

Max and Neo Nylon

Easy Come, Easy Go (Not this Time Though)

Max and Neo Nylon Martingale Collar is a little less elegant-looking, as you can probably tell from the pictures. Made from nylon, this collar cannot compete with leather martingales on the appearance front, not quite. But, unlike its leather contemporaries, the collar does not bleed and is much less expensive despite offering multiple advantages that the more premium martingales seldom match.

To name one, the light-reflective stitching will make your favorite furry rascal more visible in low-light conditions, so you're less likely to lose it in the dark and the dog is less likely to cause an accident. To give you more, the model comes equipped with an easy-release buckle that lets you switch between two collars hassle-free. Plus, the quick-snap mechanism on the buckle can prove important in extreme situations (like when the dog gets stuck somewhere or twists and tangles the collar). The edges on this martingale are a bit rough, we're not crazy about that, but we're almost crazy about the little chain loop that this model adopts where you can hang tags and charms.

Summing up, Max and Neo Nylon Martingale Collar is an affordable yet, in some ways, excellent model that most dog owners can benefit from but especially the ones whose dogs seem to have limitless energy.

Berry Pet Stainless Steel Double Plated

No Chafing, no Sharp Points, no Rough Edges

Berry Pet Stainless Steel Double-Plated Martingale Collar ditches fabrics, relying upon stainless steel instead. Needless to say, this decision entails certain advantages as well as disadvantages.

To start with the more negative part, the stainless steel construction makes the collar quite heavy, so we would not recommend putting this on a small, fragile dog. To shift gears and pivot towards more positive sides, unlike fabric collars, this one does not incorporate sharp points and rough edges, so you can walk your best friend without worrying about chafing or general irritations.

Because the model is double-plated, even the more relentless mutts will not be able to break this collar, not even close. What's more, the stainless steel part means that this martingale will not fall victim to rust and corrosion and will not start tarnishing eventually. Finally, the chrome finish should also not start chipping off with time, so the collar will remain good-looking for quite a while.

To put it differently, as long as your dog is not a small little weakling, chances are it will like and appreciate Berry Pet Stainless Steel Double-Plated Martingale Collar separating your pet from most dogs with less cool-looking collars.

Blueberry Pet Essentials Classic

Fitting Various Needs and Preferences

Blueberry Pet Essentials Classic Martingale Collar is the cheapest martingale you can find that's not terrible. The clasp on this one is not very sturdy but, besides that, nothing about this product gives away its budget price tag. First things first, you can choose between countless colors and sizes, fitting different needs and preferences.

With this martingale, you'll have more control over your furry companion without choking it. As long as you choose the right size, the collar will be hanging loose when the dog's not pulling the leash but not loose enough so that the doggo can remove it at will. Of course, you can also adjust its length, so you will not have to buy a new collar a few months later because your dog grew out of it.

The model's made from nylon, not the most relentless material but, incorporating high-density webbing, this product earns considerable longevity points and should easily last years. Plus, with its nylon construction, the collar easily survives rain, snow, and washings, which is not bad considering that you're paying practically pennies here.

With all that in mind, Blueberry Pet Essentials Classic Martingale Collar will let you take care of your four-legged pal without paying through the nose.

What Is a Martingale Collar?

Traditional choke collars are not necessarily bad, we're not saying that. But, truth be told, they're also not great, at least not as an all-around option that you want your dog wearing most of the time. No, as the name suggests, these collars choke dogs, which is not something you want, right? With that in mind, choosing a martingale is usually a much more sensible choice.

Also known as no-slip collars and limited-slip collars, martingales provide more control and prevent the dog from backing and slipping out. They constrict the dog when it pulls on the leash, with the tension tightening the small loop on the collar and pulling the large loop, making the fit tight but not as tight as choke collars'.

Setting this safety principle aside, what makes great martingale collars great and not so great ones is not surprising, including the materials the collars are made from and different additional details like light-reflective stitching, loops and rings that can accommodate tags and charms, the release buckle, and so on.

Though they're also great training collars, some believe that bark collars and prong collars are more effective, so you can look towards those as well.
