Diamondback Bicycles Sync'r Carbon

Pricey but Impressively Capable

With a price tag close to $3,000, the Sync’r hardtail bike from Diamondback might seem pretty expensive for this category of mountain bikes. However, given what it offers for that price, you shouldn't overlook it. The model boasts a number of features and capabilities more characteristic of mainstream brands that fall within a much higher price range.

Even at a glance, the bicycle looks solid, reliable, and robust. And it proves this in spades in practice. The bike is distinguished by progressive geometry not so common for hardtails. The Monocoque carbon frame is definitely a step forward as compared to an aluminum design. While being extremely rugged and durable, it is surprisingly lightweight, adding no excess weight to the whole bike construction. Thus, though hefty and massive, the model weighs only 29 lbs. Besides, the boost spacing works to increase stiffness while a tapered 66-degree head tube along with a 74-degree seat tube ensures a comfortable sitting position for longer climbs. In other words, you’ll get everything you expect from a high-end bike frame.

Something that looks a bit of overkill for this type of bike, but which makes it really shine is a 140mm Fox 34 Float Performance fork along with an advanced SRAM GX Eagle drivetrain, which is a pricey upgrade from previous lower-key versions and definitely adds value to the Sync’r bike. Thus, the suspension can easily handle an aggressive riding style and you’ll get a wide gear range for precise and smooth speed control.

To proceed, two-piston Shimano hydraulic disc brakes with 180 mm front and 160 mm rear rotors keep it safe by ensuring secure stopping power under any weather conditions, no matter if the road is dry or wet.

Review of Diamondback Bicycles Sync'r Carbon Hardtail Mountain Bike

Give Those Hard Trails a Speedy Ride

While hardtail bikes are considered to be not particularly good for racing, the Diamondback Sync’r breaks that stereotype and has gained the reputation of being a hard trail racer, which makes it a real find for those who feel the need for speed. As such, it has a few aces up its sleeve to compete with full-suspension models on rough tracks. An upgraded Fox34 fork readily dampens the hits and bumps on tough and rocky terrain while fat 2.8-inch tires on 27.5-inch wheels have better traction and can go through just about anything. The GX drivetrain works miracles on pedaling performance, making the bike highly responsive to acceleration and speed control. Meanwhile, the 150mm seat drop will let you effortlessly adjust the seat height on the go for maximum riding comfort.

That said, the Sync’r hardtail mountain bike from Diamondback is a hardcore model and a kind of all-arounder you can use for cross-country races, tricky climbs, or challenging single tracks and even just for the rides to the store or park jumps.

Steppenwolf Men's Tundra Pro

Tried and Tested Branded Quality

German car brands are deservedly worldwide leaders known for their exceptional long-lasting engineering quality and amazingly high road performance. In a few words, those vehicles are built to last and manifest their best performance during the whole service life. The same is true for German bikes. Thus, premium-grade quality and close attention to detail in a combo with a price tag under $2,000 are what makes the Steppenwolf Tundra Pro hardtail bike a solid runner up in our compilation.

The bike is designed and manufactured in one of the most advanced bicycle factories. MIFA Bicycle Works has been producing bikes for over a century, since 1907. So, they know everything about these swift iron horses and how to make a bike show its best on any type of road. Hence, the Steppenwolf Tundra Pro really stands out for its hard-to-beat quality and meticulously thought out construction. The aluminum frame the model comes fitted with cuts down on the bike's overall weight and makes it one of the lightest in its class. On the other hand, it is extremely durable and damage-proof in order to withstand heavy workloads and extreme rides.

27.5-inch wheels with 2.6-inch tires don’t add much to the cycle weight, yet greatly contribute to its off-road abilities. Bundled with the RockShox Reba R front suspension featuring a 100 mm travel fork, the wheels will let you overcome rocks, bumps, roots, and even steeper grades with ease while an adjustable handlebar with grippy handles will provide comfortable and precise steering control for tricky cross-country rides.

To proceed with the bike’s geometry, the bike is a great hard trail performer, cross-country racer, and a marathoner. The shorter rear section paired with the steeper handle tube angle noticeably enhances the bike’s agility and maneuverability, making it a smooth runner both when going uphill and when going downhill.

Review of Steppenwolf Men's Tundra Pro Hardtail Mountain Bike

No Tricky Assembly Needed

Going strong in their meticulous attention to design and detail, the company delivers the Steppenwolf Tundra Pro fully assembled, which is an obvious advantage over other models of this type that usually need assembly and the whole process can turn out to be pretty tedious and time-consuming, especially if you are new to off-road cycling or you are rather a cycling enthusiast with no assembly skills. Hence, the Steppenwolf is ready to hit the road straight out of the box. Not only do you not need to put it together but also the pro-grade Shimano gears need no adjustment. You just need to set the saddle and the handlebar to your height and off you go. 24 pedaling speeds will give you excellent mobility while front and rear Shimano disc brakes will keep you safe and secure during those cross-country rides.

To cut a long story short, distinguished by top quality and smooth riding performance and offering no assembly fuss, the Steppenwolf Tundra Pro is one of the best hardtail mountain bikes that will become a reliable and faithful road companion both for beginners and experienced enthusiasts.

NENGGE 26 Inch Fat Tire

For All Sorts of Terrain

It’s not a secret that outdoor cycling is a seasonal activity greatly limited by regional climate and weather conditions. Hence, during colder seasons, most bikers are bound to indoor training. Yet, fat-tire bikes make a great difference in this concern and bring outdoor cycling to a completely new level. So, if you are one of those avid outdoor riders, the fat tire hardtail mountain bike from NENGGE will take you anywhere in any weather.

What sets this bike apart from the other models in this review are the dual-rim 26-inch wheels with fat tires. Not only do they look heftier but also they perform great where common mountain tires would fail or where it would normally take you extra effort and pedal force. When properly inflated, these fat tires perform equally great and will ensure a smooth ride on muddy paths, rocky terrain, and sandy beaches. Neither will they slip on snow or wet pavement. Add to this a dual suspension system that will further enhance the natural shock-absorbing qualities of fat tires and neutralize the road impact and you’ll get a mountain bike with one-of-a-kind passability. As such, the NEGGE is suitable for challenging cross-country rides and city roads alike. It will let you ride smooth and in comfort, whatever the weather and season, thus, letting you enjoy your hobby to the fullest or sticking to your training schedule, no matter what.

With fat tires and a sturdy high-carbon steel frame, the NEGGE bike is heavier than many of its rivals. Yet, it’s a normal thing for this type of bike, meaning it is imbued with all-road performance. The somewhat heavyweight design might reduce the bike’s agility, however, the MicroNEW gears ensuring 27 speeds will give you full control over acceleration and let you hone your pedaling skills. Meanwhile, double mechanical disc brakes provide an immediate braking effect and will keep your safe on tricky trails.

Review of NENGGE 26 Inch Fat Tire Hardtail Mountain Bike

... and All Types of Riders

Suitable for all sorts of terrain and road surfaces, the NEGGE fat-tire hardtail bike is also suitable for all types of riders. Thus, the adjustable seat post and handlebar allow customizing the saddle height and setting the handlebar to perfectly fit your individual height for a comfy ride and convenient steering. Other than that, unlike lighter and slimmer mountain bikes, fat-tire models boast a higher workload that makes them a great choice for any type of body build and a perfect match for taller and bigger riders. That said, the NEGGE boasts a workload of 375 pounds, so, even if you have some excess weight, you can still enjoy all the benefits of outdoor cycling.

To continue, heftier tires and the increased bike weight also work to improve ground traction and enhance overall rider stability. For beginning bikers, it’s much easier to keep balance on a fat-tire bike and rather focus on pedaling and steering than trying to simply sit on the saddle.

All things considered, the NEGGE fat-tire hardtail bike is a nice all-season and all-road model that will be highly appreciated by all avid outdoor cyclists and makes the introduction to off-road cycling maximum smooth and easy for novices.

What Is a Hardtail Mountain Bike?

Mountain bikes come in a number of varieties and greatly vary in types. Unless you are an experienced off-road biker, you’ll hardly be able to figure out the specific features just by the model’s name. However, when it comes to purchasing this type of bike, the biggest dilemma is usually about whether you need a full-suss or a hardtail bicycle. Well, the major difference between these two lies in the suspension type and riding style each of the types best work for.

Thus, while a full-suspension bike has both a front suspension fork and a rear shock absorber, as the name suggests, a hardtail model comes fitted only with a front fork and is, hence, “harder” on the tail. The lack of a shock absorber, however, means fewer parts, which results in a more lightweight construction and lower maintenance. Besides, hardtail bikes are noticeably lower in price than their full-suspension counterparts, which becomes a decisive selling point for many customers, especially those who are on a stringent budget and are not ready yet for more technical trails that full-suss models are mostly meant for.

When it comes to the riding style, hardtail bikes will ensure a comfy and enjoyable ride on smoother off-road trails and will be faster on steep climbs. Though a bit tougher on cross-country terrain, hardtails will do for those paths as well, thus allowing you to become more technically superior. Yet, where this type of bike cannot compete with full-suspension models is downhills and steep descends.

Overall, hardtails are really great for beginning riders who have just tapped into the fascinating atmosphere of off-road cycling. It will help you learn some basic skills like weight balancing, cornering, and even jumping.

To keep you extremely comfortable and protected during cross-country rides, special mountain bike pedals, shoes, and a helmet will definitely add to your cycling arsenal.

What Features to Compare

Though designed and engineered following pretty much the same principle, hardtail mountain bikes still greatly differ by their geometry, which depends on the riding style you want to follow. So, to make the process of choosing a hardtail bike less of a hassle for you, there are some standard points to consider.

Type

Depending on whether you are a traditional cross country racer or prefer having fun when tackling tricky sections, there are cross-country and trail hardtails accordingly. To meet your need for speed, cross-country models are a bit slimmer and lighter. They are usually fitted with thinner handlebars and compact rigid seats and feature fast-rolling wheels ranging from 29” to 27” in diameter. Meanwhile, trail models are a bit heftier and have plus-size tires to provide better cushioning on bumpy paths and ensure more traction. They also feature wider handlebars to enhance riding and steering control.

Frame

To be really lightweight and easy to handle, hardtail bikes often come equipped with aluminum frames. However, without adding too much weight, frames made of high-carbon steel boast added stiffness and rigidity that won’t go amiss on bumpy roads.

Wheels

The golden wheel size standard for this type of bike is 26”. Yet, as we’ve already mentioned, it has gradually shifted to 27.5” for faster rides and 29” wheels are also available for cross-country races and easy climbs.

Braking System

Brakes are yet another important point to check since they make your rides controllable and are an essential safety feature. The most common braking system you’ll come across on hardtail mountain bikes is the one built around disc brakes. Whether mechanical or hydraulic, disc brakes provide consistent braking performance under any weather conditions and deliver enhanced braking power. V-brakes are less popular today, yet still can be found on many older models and offer excellent braking precision along with great reliability.

Gears

The number of included bike gears ensure improved and accurate speed control that is much needed for comfy pedaling on different types of terrain. In this concern, hardtail bikes come fitted with gears that offer from 12 to as many as about 30 speeds. So, to pick the one that will best suit you, it’s advisable to regard your riding needs first.

Did you know?

Know Your Mountain Bike

Though the name of mountain bikes sounds self-explanatory, in fact, it’s a kind of banner for different types of bikes intended for off-road cycling that greatly vary both by the type of terrain and by the riding style. Hence, whether you are an experienced rider or a newbie to this cycling activity, it’s always beneficial to distinguish between the mountain bike types to make the most out of your rides. And the easiest way to get the right off-road bike is to differentiate between the models by the riding discipline.

  • Cross country bikes need to be maneuverable, fast, and responsive in speed control. Here, hardtails make the best option for novice riders, and full-suspension bikes providing better stability for tougher roads will perfectly fit seasoned bikers.

  • All-mountain riding bikes are usually robust full-suspension models with more travel in a rear suspension to neutralize the bumps and drops you’ll face on natural mountain terrain. These bikes also need more rugged wheels with thicker tires to resist punctures.

  • Downhill bikes stand out for a slacker design with a longer profile and lower overall height to be faster and easier to accelerate since speed and precise motion control are what you need for going downhill. In addition, these bikes normally have higher suspension travel up to 220 mm and feature much heftier construction to endure excess wear and tear.

  • Dirt jumping bikes tend to have a simple yet durable design with sturdy frames, single gears, and no-frills brakes. To perform tricks, they also need to be lightweight and agile while a higher front suspension provides good shock absorption for epic jumps.

  • Freeride bikes are created to fit different applications. Since the free ride is a combo of tricks and mountain biking, these types of bikes are also as simple as those for dirt jumping, yet, they instead come with a full suspension for better control on tricky trails. Lightweight frames here contribute to excellent maneuverability while wide suspension travel offers efficient shock absorption.

Mountain Biking Beginner Tips

If you are about to waggle your toes in the world of off-road biking, there are a few handy tips to make your first off-road ride more of an enjoyable adventure than a challenge.

  • Mind the tire pressure. While hard tires work great for commutes over even and smooth asphalted roads, they will make you feel every bump and rock on the trail. So, the best tire pressure for tough terrain is about 40-50 PSI.

  • Pick the right tire type. To keep you stable on muddy, rocky, and bumpy paths, your bike should be fitted with special mountain tires that usually offer good traction and don’t get clogged with dirt.

  • Go clipless. If you are an avid road commuter, chances are great you’ve gotten used to clipped pedals. However, in mountain biking, clipless pedals are more common since it’s essential to be able to get off the pedals when needed. And though both pedal types work well for off-road rides, it’s easier for beginners to get used to a new riding technique when cycling clipless.

  • Give it some speed. Once getting into mountain biking, many riders intuitively brake to overcome obstacles. However, the whole gist and fun of off-road riding is to roll over those roots, rocks, and bumps. So, don’t slow down and simply roll over them.
