PROS

The reversing lever will let you change the motion from left to right and vice versa, all without having to remove the instrument from the fastener. The off-corner loading design of the box-end provides a much stronger grip, making it easier to loosen or fasten some of the more rigid nuts and bolts.

CONS

The ratchet gears are somewhat noisy.

OUR VERDICT

GearWrench 9509 isn't necessarily the most affordable prospect on the market today. But if you happen to be a professional mechanic, we reckon these instruments will prove their worth and could very well save you some money in the long run, thanks to the sheer quality of each wrench.

GearWrench 9509

A Smarter Approach

We've sifted through a variety of different options and have to say that GearWrench 9509 might just be the best combination wrench set on the market right now. The sheer quality of each tool is outstanding and their smart design makes these tools a lot more practical and convenient.

Of course, there isn't a whole lot you can say about the quality of the instruments, even if it happens to be outstanding. The only thing we'll say is that the all-metal construction makes them robust and a mirror chrome finish makes the wrenches look pretty damn sleek.

As for the construction, we would first like to highlight the Surface Drive™, a design solution that virtually eliminates fastener rounding. The reversing lever will let you change the motion from left to right and vice versa, all without having to remove the instrument from the fastener. The off-corner loading design of the box-end provides a much stronger grip, making it easier to loosen or fasten some of the more rigid nuts and bolts.

Another nice little detail that makes these instruments more practical is the 15° offset of the box-end. A construction like that gives you extra knuckle clearance, so you're far less likely to injure yourself with these tools.

To put all of it differently, GearWrench 9509 isn't necessarily the most affordable prospect on the market today. But if you happen to be a professional mechanic, we reckon these instruments will prove their worth and could very well save you some money in the long run.

Tekton 90191

Where Quantity Meets Quality

At first, you might think that Tekton 90191 takes more of a numbers approach. And that's not necessarily wrong. Thirty combination wrenches for less than 100 bucks is a pretty impressive deal. But it isn't just the large number of instruments that makes this set from Tekton such an attractive option. The tools themselves do not disappoint either.

Fifty percent of any combination wrench is its open end. Here, the said end is angled 15 degrees. It may not sound like much to people with a limited amount of experience in car maintenance. But it is actually a bigger deal than one might think. This way, you get the ability to flip the wrench over. This kind of design solution will allow you to engage bolts and nuts twice as often, especially in tighter spaces.

Another fifty percent of a wrench like that is, of course, the box end. And there are a lot of small details here that make the box ends much more practical than the usual deal. First, they incorporate a 12-point design, so you get twice more access angles compared to the usual 6-point one.

Round-off is an always present issue with wrenches. To prevent it, the instruments in question grip the flat sides of the fasteners' heads. Finally, the box end is also offset 15 degrees. A design solution like that makes it easier for you to reach around obstructions.

In short, you rarely get quantity and quality in the same package. But that's exactly what you get from the Tekton 90191 combination wrench set. The number of tools you get is impressive but, again, it is the quality of these tools that makes the whole thing such an attractive option in the first place.

ToolGuards TG201

Emergency Repairs Made Easy

The people at ToolGuards call this kit a deluxe combo set. And we don't know if we'd agree with the deluxe part. One could say that they're laying it on thick here, just a little bit. But we can't say that the opposite is the case either. All in all, this is a good, quality socket wrench set.

First, you get 22 combination wrenches for a pretty modest price, so there's that. The number of tools aside, we can't say that the tools themselves are underwhelming either. Made of Cr-V steel, these things are rugged and durable.

On top of the metal construction, the instruments feature a chrome-plated finish, a finish that makes them look really good and protects against corrosion in the long run. In addition to it, the manufacturers have also added some sand-blasted treatment to make the tools particularly smooth, a real pleasure to work with.

When it comes to the design of these combination wrenches, there's really nothing out of the ordinary here. But the box-end of each tool does feature those 72-tooth ratchet gears that you usually get from the more expensive wrenches. Since these gears need just a 5-degree swing arc to work (compared to the usual 30-degree requirement), the instruments are capable of providing a reliable torque that will let you loosen or tighten any nut or bolt without rounding it.

In conclusion, ToolGuards TG201 is a great combination set that will make emergency repairs an absolute breeze. These efficient and reliable wrenches will let you tackle a variety of different tasks. The slim profile of each instrument will get you into the tightest nooks and crannies.

Crescent CCWS4

No Fastener Rounding

Crescent CCWS4 combination wrench set doesn't really bring anything new to the table. But it doesn't really have to. This 14-piece set includes everything you need for car maintenance, different household projects, and emergency repairs.

The most discerning characteristic of this set is definitely the quality of its tools. Comprised of vanadium alloy steel, they give you that long-lasting durability that you want out of your hand tools. The instruments are heat-treated for increased strength and improved resistance against corrosion and abrasion.

Speaking of which, there's also a layer of chrome-plated finish that helps the tools battle corrosion and a mirror-polish finish that makes sure the wrenches will look good as new even after a few years of service.

Despite the fact that this is a pretty affordable set, every wrench incorporates the Surface Drive technology, a design solution that essentially eliminates rounding of fasteners. One small detail that we really like about this set is the fact that the instruments have sizes stamped on each side. These mirroring engraved marking make it a lot easier to find and choose the right tool.

The only real issue we have with these wrenches is that the edges on the handles aren't completely rounded, so they start digging into your hands after some time. Other than that, Crescent CCWS4 is just about everything you could ask out of a combination wrench set. Despite the relatively modest price, it fits beginners and experienced handymen alike.

GRIP 89358

Drop-Forged and Heat-Treated

GRIP 89358 is an easy choice for any professional on the go, somebody who needs or likes to carry his tools with him. This 24-piece set features professional mechanic's quality and, considering the number of different sizes that you get out of the package, you'll be able to work with just about any bolt or nut.

Admittedly, the tools do not necessarily look the part. The manufacturers decide not to implement the usual chrome-plated finish that makes other instruments look shiny. But they do play their part. Made of drop-forged, heat-treated alloy steel, these tools will be able to serve you for years to come. The raised panel of each wrench provides some extra strength that helps you tackle tougher and more stubborn fasteners.

The 12-point box-end gives you double the access angles to work with, making the instruments more versatile and a lot more practical. There are engraved markings on each side of the wrenches, so you'll easily be able to identify the right tool in a toolkit full of different instruments.

Aside from the wrenches themselves, you'll also get a convenient organizer roll pouch that easily fits into your standard toolbox, so you can always bring these instruments with you.

All things considered, GRIP 89358 is a pretty basic combination wrench set for repairing objects around the home, garage, or workshop. Though they don't look the part, these flexible instruments will help you handle a great number of different household and automotive projects.

What Is a Combination Wrench?

A combination wrench is exactly what you'd think it is: a double-ended instrument that features a box-end on one side and an open-end design on the other side of the tool. As you probably know, the open-end side will help you tighten and loosen bolts and nuts in smaller spaces. The box-end, on the other hand, provides leverage and a firm grip, exactly what you need to handle some of the most stubborn fasteners. Some box-ended wrenches also incorporate a pivoting head that helps in tight spaces.

Generally speaking, both ends of these combination instruments feature the same size. The majority of combination wrenches also include engraved markings in both metric and imperial units.

Other than that, the key to finding the right set of tools is the same here as it is with any other similar product. You take into consideration the number of instruments, the sizes, and the quality of the material and you should be well-equipped to make the right choice.

If you're a mechanic and you need something with a bit more strength and versatility, a combination wrench just won't cut it more often than not. But a torque wrench will prove to be just the right instrument for your car maintenance needs. And if you need extra power, you might want to opt for an impact wrench.
