The handle is uncomfortable (the knurling is too shallow).

OUR VERDICT

MERKUR MK-34C is that classic 2-piece double-edge safety razor that people have been using for decades now. The model is pretty much the perfect combination of blade angle, blade alignment, weight, and finish. It is durable and precise. All in all, probably the best safety razor on the list.

MERKUR MK-34C

Safe but Effective

MERKUR MK-34C is that classic 2-piece double-edge safety razor that people have been using for decades now. The model is pretty much the perfect combination of blade angle, blade alignment, weight, and finish. There are many little details that contribute to its simple and effective design, details that let the razor glide over your face like no other. The model doesn't feel aggressive whatsoever.

At the same time, the shave is as close as they come. Most razors like that require at least three passes but the model makes do with two and a little cleanup. The extra-thick handle and heavy head let the model do pretty much it all for you, with very little effort on your part.

The crosshatch knurling offers a firm grip, making sure the razor doesn't slip out of your hands. That being said, the knurling is a little too shallow for our taste, making the handle grippy but not too comfortable.

On the composition side, the chrome-plated brass handle and die-cast zinc-alloy baseplate are remarkably rugged and durable. These materials make sure the razor is able to last.

Bottom line, MERKUR MK-34C offers the closest shave without multi-blade skin irritation. The model uses inexpensive but effective double-edge blades. It is durable and precise. All in all, probably the best safety razor on this list.

VIKINGS BLADE The Crusader

Release from Shaving Conventions

Vikings Blade The Crusader is as daring as these names come. We can see where the people behind the product are coming from. The model's biggest strength is its continuous aggression adjustment band with no markings that allows for a spirited shaving experience, perfect for enthusiasts and beginners alike.

On the other hand, its asymmetrical dual-head profile makes the razor equally suitable for normal and sensitive skin areas. The 1st side incorporates a scalloped comb that allows for aggressive shaves on normal skin. The 2nd side is equipped with a smoother bar that lets you treat sensitive skin/areas with gentleness.

The high-end brass construction is no joke either. The model is durable, hefty (109 grams/3.84 ounces), and long (117 millimetres/4.6 inches). Just keep in mind that its rose gold plating is meant to age, fade, and, consequently, form a unique weathered appearance. That being said, make sure to towel-dry the razor after use to maintain it.

The only problem we have with the product in general is that the razor comes supplied with no blades, so you have to purchase them separately.

Aside from that, Vikings Blade The Crusader allows for the most free-spirited shaving experience for enthusiasts who know what they're doing and newbies looking to learn the ropes. The leatherette travel case makes the product an excellent gift.

Weishi Nostalgic

Smooth as a Baby's Bottom

Weishi Nostalgic is a joy to work with. The model looks elegant, graceful, and refined. The worn-out silver color scheme adds character to any bathroom cabinet. The knurling is grippy and comfortable. It forms an effective non-slip grip that lets you wield the razor with wet hands.

The only issue with the model's composition is that the metal housing is susceptible to corrosion, so we would definitely recommend wiping it clean and towel-drying after every shave. Otherwise, the model will quickly lose its attractive appearance.

From the practicality standpoint, the razor's biggest selling point is its butterfly opening mechanism. It lets you quickly change the blade. Plus, the mechanism is really durable. The twist-knob mechanism located at the model's bottom has these special little notches that let you release the blade even with wet hands. The mechanism is especially great because the razor comes supplied with 5 blades, so you won't have to purchase any separately for months.

What else is there to add? The model is pretty long (4.3 inches) and lightweight (2.5 ounces).

To sum it up, Weishi Nostalgic sticks with traditional methods, showing excellent results. The angle is important here. The head doesn't pivot, so make sure to go as slow as possible. Do that and you'll be able to enjoy zero-shadow shave that's as smooth as a baby's bottom.

Parker Safety Razor 99RPSR

Quality Shaving Experience

Parker Safety Razor 99RPSR is an excellent heavyweight contender. The model looks tasteful and refined. Don't let the looks fool you though. This razor means business. The solid brass frame with advanced plating process is as tough and rugged as they come. It is practically immune to rust, corrosion, scratches, chipping, fading, you name it. The finish will remain elegant and refined for years to come.

The 4-inch long textured handle offers a sure grip even with wet hands. The 3.4-ounce razor is perfectly balanced, making the hefty model a pleasure to work with.

Generally speaking, the model's twist-to-open ("Butterfly Open") mechanism allows for easy and effortless blade replacement. The only issue is that the twist mechanism at the bottom is round and smooth, meaning you won't always be able to turn that mechanism with wet hands.

On the bright side, the razor comes supplied with 5 premium platinum blades. These blades are effective and durable, so you won't have to purchase any blades separately for many months to come.

All things considered, Parker Safety Razor 99RPSR is just what the doctor ordered for quality dry/wet shaving experience. This thing shaves away the toughest beards with ease, leaving no irritations. Plus, it will last you for years to come.

Van Der Hagen Tradition

Where Tradition Meets Innovation

Van Der Hagen Tradition is the best travel model on the list. The razor is just 3.5-inches long. The small handle offers improved control over the shaving process. The chrome-plated brass construction is where the Tradition meets innovation. It protects the finish from rust and corrosion. The chrome-plated baseplate doesn't begin to chip nor fade with time. The usual knurled handle is present as well, offering a non-slip grip to make the razor usable with wet hands.

The razor is no joke. But so are the 5 ice-tempered stainless steel blades with Teflon coating that come with the package. These things are effective and precise, merciless to the tiniest hairs but merciful to your skin. You'll have no issues making your beard even and symmetrical.

That being said, any double-edge blade brand will work in this razor. The only issue is that the blades can be somewhat difficult/time-consuming to replace, despite the butterfly opening that supposedly allows for quick and easy blade replacement.

All things considered, Van Der Hagen Tradition is suitable for men and women alike. That being said, men will definitely be more likely to put this safety razor to good use. Affordable and effective, the model is pretty much everything we look for in these razors.

What Is a Safety Razor?

Shavers these days come equipped with various wacky technologies that promise a comfortable and smooth shaving experience. The only issue is that the most expensive electric shavers still aren't nearly as safe as regular double-edge razors. Sure, these things look antiquated and intimidating. They couldn't possibly be safer than their high-tech counterparts, right? Wrong.

These razors create less drag with fewer irritations. They're much better for coarse facial hair too. These razors offer closer shave than just about any electric model. The blades are easy to replace. But the best part is that you're the one in charge. You're the one controlling the process. It is up to you whether your shave will look good or not.

Sure, these traditional razors incorporate certain modern-day solutions too. More often than not, these models incorporate non-slip handles. Sometimes, you'll find safety razors with an asymmetrical dual-head design (for regular and sensitive skin). Certain models feature a smart rattling end-tip to drain trapped water. Other than that, the differences are usually inconsequential.

They won't let you maintain your beard as well as beard trimmers and straight razors though, so keep these shaving implements in mind too.
