PROS

The control center comes with signal lights that you can use to keep the train traffic on the move. Using the forklift, you'll be able to move cargo containers. The crane’s extendable boom arm will let you lift the logs into the log car. With 16 curved and 16 straight rails, as well as a railroad switch with a lever, you can create many different tracks.

CONS

Certain pieces like the wrench, gold bars, money bills are really small and easy to lose.

OUR VERDICT

LEGO City 60198 is the best LEGO train set on this list simply because it is the most elaborate and detailed kit here. It offers practically infinite room for open-ended play and imagination. With this set, your kids will be able to put together a runaway train story or their very own locomotive world that will play by their rules.

OUR VERDICT

LEGO City 60197 is a great toy for kids and adults. As far as LEGO train sets go, this is about as realistic and authentic as they come. You'll be able to recreate the overall railway experience down to, more or less, every little detail. The large set with its moving train is easy but challenging at the same time.

OUR VERDICT

LEGO DUPLO 10875 offers a nice mix of education and enjoyment, encouraging learning through fun play. There is hardly any toddler that won't be able to benefit and enjoy this simple but relatively inventive 105-piece LEGO set. It will help your kid develop logical reasoning and motor skills.

PROS

There are only 52 pieces in the set, meaning your average toddler shouldn't find it too difficult to put them together. The pieces here are huge, so your little one will unlikely be able to swallow them. The train looks fun and colorful. It comes equipped with sound effects too.

CONS

There are only 2 minifigures in the set.

OUR VERDICT

LEGO DUPLO 10507 is the simplest, most basic set on this list, perfect for toddlers who aren't yet ready for something a little more complex and complicated than that. Nevertheless, it should be able to provide an interactive storytelling experience, engaging your little one for hours on end.

PROS

In addition to the usual full circle track, the kit comes with a decorated tree that spins as the train moves. The train comes decorated with string lights, green wreaths, and white tree elements. Sticking with that holiday theme, the model's engine incorporates small and large red-colored locomotive wheels.

CONS

You'll have to buy certain pieces separately to motorize the engine.

OUR VERDICT

LEGO Creator 10254 is easily one of the best (definitely the most appropriate) Christmas presents for a creative child over the age of 12 that money can buy. It isn't one of those LEGO train sets that are easy to put together, making it the perfect gift for experienced builders.

LEGO City 60198

Create Your Own Runaway Train Story

LEGO City Cargo Train 60198 is LEGO at its best. With this set, your kid won't just be able to build his own railroad, with lots of moving pieces. No, with this set, they'll be able to put together a runaway train story or their very own locomotive world that will play by their rules.

Packing 1226 pieces, this LEGO train set makes it possible to do it all. These pieces assemble into a cargo train with four cars, a control center, an armored truck, a forklift, and rail tracks. More specifically, you'll find 16 curved rails and the same number of straight rails, meaning you get the opportunity to build the most elaborate roads. Using the forklift, you'll be able to move cargo containers. The crane’s extendable boom arm will let you lift the logs into the log car.

The main idea here is customization. A couple of buildable pallets with gold bar elements, money bills, a snow cat, snowmobile, as well as 6 LEGO minifigures, (including 4 train workers, a security officer, and a thief) will allow your kid to construct and conduct his own scenarios. The only downside to these little pieces is that they're really easy to lose but that's not really something that you can change without changing their purpose in first place.

In short, LEGO City 60198 is the best LEGO train set on this list simply because it is the most elaborate and detailed kit here. It offers practically infinite room for open-ended play and imagination. With this little steam train set, nothing is off-limits (railway-wise).

LEGO City 60197

Authentic Railway Experience

LEGO City 60197 is easily one of the most realistic-looking LEGO sets there is. Including 677 different pieces, it allows you to build an authentic railroad with excellent attention to details. Using the 10-speed Bluetooth remote control, you'll be able to motorize and operate the electric train.

Again, the idea here is authenticity. From the train station that you can build from the set to every little nook and cranny of the train.

For example, the set lets you take off the train's roof to access the passenger cabins. You can stop at the platform to pick up passengers. There's even a cafeteria inside, with 3 mugs, 3 muffins, a croissant, hot dog, suitcase, and a messenger bag, not to mention the removable seats and tables.

Though this set is definitely not as elaborate as the previous one (hardly a surprise considering that it is packing twice fewer pieces), you'll still be able to build a full circular track, with 16 curved and 4 straight rails. The aforementioned train platform comes with 2 seats, a train signal, train service map, and traffic lights.

Sure, you won't be able to build anything other than a basic circle but there are enough details here and smaller pieces to make it exciting nonetheless.

All in all, LEGO City 60197 is a great toy for kids and adults. As far as LEGO train sets go, this is about as realistic and authentic as they come. You'll be able to recreate the overall railway experience down to, more or less, every little detail. The large set with its moving train is easy but challenging at the same time.

LEGO DUPLO 10875

Education Through Fun Play

LEGO DUPLO 10875 is that perfect blend of educational opportunities with lots of fun. There is hardly any toddler that won't be able to benefit and enjoy this simple but creative 105-piece LEGO set. Sure, it looks simple enough but there are actually a lot of moving pieces at play here.

For one, the set includes 5 color-coded action bricks that your kid can add to the tracks. Using these bricks, he'll be able to make the train turns the lights on and off, blast its horn, change the direction, stop, the list goes on. The Push&Go motor requires but a gentle push to send the train on its way.

Making a toy for toddlers can be difficult. On one hand, it has to be simple enough for the developing brain. On the other, it can't be boring. It has to be interactive and engaging. On top of the aforementioned capabilities, the set allows you to download the Lego Duplo app and unlock additional possibilities.

Speaking of the set, in addition to the locomotive, you'll find here 2 cargo wagons, a harbor, boat, café, action bricks, 2 cranes, 24 track pieces, 3 regular LEGO minifigures, and a seagull figure.

Again, LEGO DUPLO 10875 offers a nice mix of education and enjoyment, encouraging learning through fun play. You'll have to change the batteries on a regular basis but, other than that, this is one of the better LEGO train sets for toddlers.

LEGO DUPLO 10507

Toddlers can Enjoy LEGO Too

LEGO DUPLO 10507 is the simplest, most basic set on this list, perfect for toddlers who aren't yet ready for something a little more complex and complicated than that. The pieces here are huge, so your little one will unlikely be able to swallow them. Plus, there are only 52 pieces, meaning your average toddler shouldn't find it too difficult to put them together. Naturally, you can't expect this toy to be as realistic and detailed as the previous entries. No, it is a simple, colorful, easy-to-build train set.

That being said, it should be good enough for hours of creative roleplay, able to provide an interactive storytelling experience. More often than not, your toddler will respond in kind, engaging with the stories and learning through play.

Toddlers aren't conventionally brilliant but they're a lot smarter than we often give them credit for. They're perfectly capable of recognizing a shoddy train with second-rate pieces. Fortunately, that's not the case here. The train looks fun and realistic enough for a 3-year (give or take a year) old child. It comes equipped with sound effects too. In addition to the steam train, the set is packing a passenger wagon, fueling pump, signal, and a station with a ticket window.

Unfortunately, the company supplies it with no more than 2 minifigures. However, the set is perfectly compatible with all LEGO DUPLO & LEGO construction sets, so you'll always be able to mix them together for an even more creative building experience.

LEGO Creator 10254

LEGO Meets the Holiday Season

The holiday season and intricate LEGO sets are one of those things that people love more or less unanimously (bar an occasional Grinch). On that note, combining the two together seems like a no-brainer, doesn't it? Well, that's exactly what this LEGO train set does. In other words, LEGO Creator 10254 allows you to build a winter holiday train.

In addition to the usual full circle track, the kit comes with a decorated tree that spins as the train moves. Sticking with that holiday theme, the model's engine incorporates small and large red-colored locomotive wheels. As you can probably infer from the pictures, the train itself comes decorated with string lights, green wreaths, and white tree elements.

One of the best things about this set is that it includes 5 minifigures (a locomotive driver, ticket collector, a girl and a boy, grandmother, and a toy robot figure). With so much minifigure variety, the opportunities for roleplay are practically endless.

You can upgrade the train engine to have a coal tender, brick-built smoke bellowing from its stack, a coal tender, red caboose with a detailed interior. The only issue is that you'll have to buy certain pieces separately to motorize it.

To put it differently, LEGO Creator 10254 is easily one of the best (definitely the most appropriate) Christmas presents for a creative child over the age of 12 that money can buy. It isn't one of those LEGO train sets that are easy to put together, making it the perfect gift for experienced builders.

What Are LEGO Train Sets?

Toys come and toys go. But LEGOs have been around for almost a century now and it doesn't seem like they're about to lose their popularity either. What's their secret? Well, excellent marketing tactics and strategies certainly do not hurt. But, at the end of the day, it is all about the toys. See, with regular toys, your kid will have some fun, sure. But, sooner rather than later, he will grow out of them. On the other hand, nobody grows out of LEGOs.

They're great for kids because these LEGO kits allow their creativity to run wild. Pushing the little blocks together is a surprisingly effective fine motor practice. LEGOs teach kids the core principles of construction, engineering, and architecture. The educational opportunities with these sets are endless. But, most importantly, kids love LEGOs. The company just gets it. They know how to appeal to kids of all ages.

Take these LEGO train sets, for example. The way they combine the enjoyment of building your very own railway with the sheer fun of driving a sophisticated train model through one of these railroads is something that few toys give you.

But this isn't just about kids either. Don't think so? Next time you visit your parents' house, whip out that old LEGO set of yours and try to pretend like you're not having fun putting the pieces together and creating your very own little architecture landmark to play with.

All that being said, LEGOs aren't suitable for toddlers, the pieces are just too small and even the simplest sets will prove too complicated. So, before you go looking for the best LEGO sets, you might want to consider these marble runs and wooden block sets first.
