CANPIS (CP001)

A Strap with a Temperament

The CANPIS CP001 is an elegant, expensive-looking camera neck strap. Its vintage style gives the model a temperament that cheap straps do not quite possess.

Made from 100% genuine soft leather and featuring firm handmade sewing, this strap is durable and comfortable. Likewise, its wide belt (measuring 1.2 inches) makes sure there's no noticeable burden on the neck or shoulders. Furthermore, you can adjust the nylon belt, even accommodating people who stand 6 feet 3 inches tall.

The metal ring attachments and the loops that are shipped with the strap will have no issues supporting devices as heavy as 25 pounds, meaning that you can carry SLR/DSLR cameras, mirrorless DSLRs, different digital cameras, even camcorders. While the ring attachments and the loops secure the device, the triangular split piece lets you customize the fit.

The product does not really have major downsides. The colors (brown or black) might look different from advertised but not necessarily more different than you would expect.

All things considered, if you want a camera strap with an attitude, the CANPIS CP001 will prove right up your alley. It is stronger than cheap straps and much more attractive than its budget alternatives.

Art Tribute Red Woven

Positive Vibes

The Art Tribute Red Woven Vintage Camera Strap resembles something you'd find lying around at your grandma's house. From what we can tell, this model targets self-described free spirits, creative and joyful souls. The strap makes you project positive vibes and adds standout style points. Crafted from premium-grade cotton webbing and polyurethane (PU) leather, this strap is soft and pleasant to the touch.

The problem here is that the same materials also make the model a little weak. Of course, with its maximum load capping at 10 pounds, the strap's weak in theory but, in practice, there are very few cameras that weigh more than that, so its strength is passable.

What's not quite as passable is that the PU leather looks attractive initially but loses its attractive appearance within the first few years, which is unfortunate. What is not unfortunate, however, is the high-tensile plastic fasteners that fasten the camera in the most secure and firm fashion, so you can walk and work without worrying about dropping it.

Bottom line, the Art Tribute Red Woven Vintage Camera Strap is an excellent blend of style and functionality that will fit artsy photographers as well as those who only care about the strap being secure and comfortable.

TARION (LYN-241Z)

Going Vintage

The TARION LYN-241Z borrows inspiration from the old school without betraying the new school. The strap looks classic and vintage but there's also something modern about it, something contemporary. That something might be the anti-slip surface that prevents the strap from moving around during walking. That something could be the ergonomically adjustable length on both ends, accommodating photographers standing at different heights.

Its total length measures 53 inches, with the strap length stopping at 28 inches. Width-wise, the strap reaches 1.5 inches, which is great on the shoulders since wide straps like this one are better at distributing the camera's weight evenly, reducing the burden.

That being said, despite the anti-slip treatment, this strap is difficult to keep on the shoulder, so assuming you move around frantically, you'll be adjusting the strap from time to time throughout the day. On the bright side, you can move around with whatever camera you want or need since this model can support up to 22 pounds, handling the heaviest cameras and camcorders.

In short, we would recommend the TARION LYN-241Z to photographers who have an appreciation for vintage aesthetics and work with heavy equipment.

Altura (UZ0004)

Putting Function First

The Altura UZ0004 is a camera shoulder strap that is less about aesthetics and more about function. Featuring a sizable neoprene pad that measures 3 inches wide, the strap ensures even weight distribution and reduces the pressure on the carrying shoulder, preventing it from rubbing and chafing. What's more, the same pad comes equipped with a zipper pocket where you can store spare batteries, memory cards, credit or ID cards, cash, and so forth. However, despite the pad's best efforts, the strap will sometimes slide around anyway, so don't be surprised when that happens.

Removing the pad from the equation, the model incorporates a reinforced metal plate, ditching plastic and fastening the camera onto the strap with additional security. Besides that, the plate features a protective rubber bottom layer, preventing slippage and scratches. Last but not quite least, the model's quick-release design enables easy attachment as well as easy removal, so you'll be wasting less time fastening and unfastening the camera from the strap.

To sum up, the Altura UZ0004 might not be the most interesting-looking camera strap but, credit going to the neoprene pad, the model is the most functional strap within this selection.

Eorefo Vintage

More Bohemian

The Eorefo Vintage Bohemia Camera Shoulder Neck Belt Strap is a little more bohemian than vintage, if that makes sense. What we're saying is that, while we can get behind the model's colorful dress sense, this is not what we associate with vintage, not quite.

Having said that, in spite of the strap's colorful design, it is plenty practical. With the total length reaching 56 inches, the model will have no problems accommodating short and tall photographers alike. From the width perspective, the strap measures 1.5 inches, distributing the camera's weight more evenly across the shoulder so that the burden feels less heavy.

Where the model's makeup is concerned, we have mixed feelings. On the one hand, the double-sided PU leather makes the strap tough and durable. On the other hand, this camera strap could use some coating next time because, as it is right now, the model's a bit scratchy on the neck.

The quick-release buckles, however, are not scratchy at all, letting you remove the belt within seconds. Furthermore, the Duraflex™ high-tensile plastic fasteners will make sure that you can work without worrying that the strap might not handle the pressure and release the camera without your say-so.

What Is a Camera Strap?

Digital cameras (including point-and-shoot cameras), camcorders, SLR cameras, DSLR cameras, mirrorless DSLR cameras, there are more camera types today that the uninitiated reckon. As photographers know, each of these cameras has a purpose, a role that only they can play, and a job that only a specific kind of camera can handle. But, more often than not, the best cameras are pretty heavy, so carrying them around without a camera strap is seldom practical.

In general, these straps are length-adjustable, with the total length reaching somewhere between 50 and 60 inches so that the tallest photographers will not feel left out. Most come supplied with metal ring attachments and loops, letting you fasten the camera and preventing you from losing or dropping it. The best models also feature non-slip padding, making sure that the strap is not slipping around and rubbing/chaffing the skin.

Separating them, there are crossbody straps and neck straps, each type with its own strength and weaknesses. Speaking of strength, make sure that the strap you're going with can support ~10 pounds since there are cameras today that are pushing this number in the weight department.
