What Is a Computer Case?

A computer case is the enclosure that houses all of the internal components of a desktop or tower computer. Some people tend to refer to the internet components as the "CPU" (Central Processing Unit), although this is not a correct term for it. The main component inside of a computer case is the motherboard, which contains the processor, memory, and all of the other components that tie these and the peripherals together.

Also included in computer tower cases are things such as hard drives or solid state drives, optical drives (CD/DVD/Bluray), the power supply for the entire computer, and expansion cards that are connected to the motherboard, the most common of which would be a GPU. Most other components that would be installed on a computer would also be located inside of the case.

Cases tend to come in different sizes, and are generally named as such, ranging from small form factor to mid-towers, and then to full towers. Most tower systems tend to be of the mid-tower form factor, although users that require a lot of expansion area inside of the case for extra drives and other components may be better served by a full tower case.
