All-Purpose Lawn Tool

True Temper is an interesting name for a rake but we can definitely see where the people behind it were coming from with the name. First and foremost, the model is about as all-purpose lawn rake as they come. Because the head here is double-sided, there isn't much you won't be able to do with this tool.

Using the usual curved side, the model enables you to clear dead grass clippings from the lawn. This way, you let the air, sunshine, water, and fertilizers in and keep the grass healthy.

You'll be able to cultivate the soil and make it much more fertile.

The straight teeth part is there to help you pick leaves and trash and keep your lawn nice and clean.

Other than that, it's the little things that we've seen before in different thatching rakes. There's a nice cushion-end non-slip padding that is as grippy as it is comfortable.

The 54-inch hardwood handle adopts quality paint job, making it particularly moisture-resistant and good-looking to boot.

All in all, the head is nothing to complain about except for the bolts that are constantly coming loose and have to be re-tightened.

Apart from that, what we have here is probably the best thatching rake on this list. There's virtually nothing that this tool won't let you do around the lawn. In addition to being practical and functional, the model is really durable too.

Less Effort with More Result

Technically speaking, Gardena 3395 is but a rake head and not necessarily an actual thatching rake because it comes without a handle. Then again, technically speaking, calling it a rake head and not a thatching cutter would be a little reductive. Sure, you'll have to purchase a handle separately.

But, with a supporting axle and wheels, you'll be able to maintain your lawn with much less effort required on your part. The tool will let you thoroughly and effectively remove moss, weeds, and matted grass.

Incorporating special tines with smooth sliding backs made from high-grade stainless spring steel, the model doesn't leave the excess grass a single chance.

The wheels come equipped with sealed bearing, making them about as robust and durable as they come. Plus, with these wheels, you won't be limited terrain-wise.

The duroplast-coated screw-on steel connector is on the same page, sturdy and perfectly able to survive the rough and tumble of any lawn.

As far as we're concerned, the only problem here is that the plate makes it difficult to clean the blades.

Setting that aside, Gardena 3395 isn't the most versatile and/or complete entry here but it is definitely the most effective one. With this thatching cutter, you'll be able to maintain your lawn without putting in practically any effort whatsoever.

Best Thatching Rake on a Budget

As you would imagine, The Ames Companies, Inc 2915100 isn't very different from the company's previous product that we've reviewed above. It is much cheaper and, fortunately, for the most part, it doesn't really reflect the model's quality.

The biggest reason this rake is cheaper is that it doesn't incorporate a double-sided head but instead comes equipped with the usual single-sided, curved-teeth one.

In our not-so-humble opinion, it isn't really a flaw because thatching rakes aren't supposed to have a straight side in the first place.

What is a slight flaw, however, is the fact that the angle-adjustable mechanism is a little stiff at first.

On the other hand, major props to the company for implementing a mechanism like that in the first place. Using this simple mechanism, you'll be able to thatch your lawn with more comfort and efficiency.

We can extend the same sentiment towards the rubberized padding on the handle. It gives you a nice non-slip grip and lets you use the rake without work gloves.

Lastly, the hardwood 54-inch handle adds strength and durability to the rake and offers a nice range too.

In short, The AMES Companies, Inc 2915100 is a well-balanced, well-designed, and well-thought-out thatching rake. The model isn't without its flaws but considering the price, this is a quality product through and through, completely worth the small investment.

Thatch Debris like Old Grass

WOLF-Garten UGM3 Interlocken is a little different. First, this is another product that isn't necessarily a rake because it comes without a handle. Naturally, you can buy it separately, especially considering that the model, with its Interlocken™ connector, is perfectly compatible with the company's poles.

Sure, it's a hassle but the connector is great. It is very easy to attach and detach different poles. It doesn't get loose with time. There's nothing about it that we'd like to complain about.

The seemingly usual curved teeth here aren't as wide as usual. There's only 10 of them, so the model isn't necessarily as effective against moss. However, the spring blades are also a little longer than your average deal and a lot more robust. With these teeth/blades, you'll be able to thatch debris like its old grass.

What's more, you can adjust the blade bar's angle on the pendulum, making the tool more comfortable and easier to control at different angles.

Last but not least, the model just as well doubles as a scarifier, a tool that's a little different from your average thatching rake.

In other words, WOLF-Garten UGM3 Interlocken will prove a perfect fit for people with difficult terrain and unruly lawn. Just make sure to purchase one of the company's poles and you should be good to go.

Strength is in the Materials

Truper 32120 Tru Tough is relatively simple and we aren't saying that it is a bad thing. With a name like Tru Tough, you know that the company wasn't banking on complexity. It truly is tough, the folk at Truper aren't lying about that. The 54-inch North American ash wood handle is as rough and rugged as they come. Moreover, the handle is abundantly lacquered for additional strength and durability.

We aren't saying that we don't have any issues with the handle. It's not a huge downside but the manufacturers could definitely add a non-slip grip to it. Without some rubber padding, the tool can be uncomfortable to use without work gloves at times.

We can't say that it is a different story with the head and its blades. Clear-coated and gray-steel finished, the head and the teeth here look the part as well as play the part, perfectly capable of clearing moss and dead grass clippings. The stainless steel here is particularly resistant to rust and corrosion. Plus, there's practically no chance the blades will bend and/or deform with time.

The angle-adjustable mechanism here has nice, fluid movement and makes it easy to change the head's angle to complement your grip.

Bottom line, Truper 32120 Tru Tough will definitely help you keep your lawn nice and clean. It isn't a particularly complex tool but it doesn't have to be. The model does its job and it does it well enough. What's more, it is robust and durable enough to work wonders for decades to come.

What Is a Thatching Rake?

A thatching rake is a little different from the usual garden rake. A tool like that is specifically designed to be more comfortable and convenient for cutting through and removing thatch and moss, all while causing as little damage to healthy grass as humanly possible. Instead of the usual tines, these rakes incorporate sharp blades, blades that are better for picking up dying plant materials in grassy areas. These tools aren't necessarily too complex and/or convoluted.

However, there is enough difference between different models to justify separate reviews. What you should be paying attention to first and foremost are the blades. They have to be sharp, strong, and durable. The number matters as well. Fewer blades mean that you'll be able to pick up debris but might have issues with moss.

Other than that, it is the usual details. Make sure that the handle is at least passable quality- and comfort-wise. Consider the extra details like an angle-adjustable mechanism, for example, and you shouldn't have any difficulties figuring out the right thatching rake for your needs and preferences.

Provided you don't have them already or looking for a replacement, these fertilizer spreaders and watering cans will work wonders in conjunction with one of these pieces of thatching equipment.
