Anywhere You Want It

It’s not a rare sight, when in a convenience store people are standing in front of a shelf with kitchen appliances, wondering where to put it in their kitchen - will it fit on the shelf or rather put it on a table? That includes bread boxes too. It might be a troublesome question, considering that sometimes, there are tons of appliances in our kitchen. Brabantia Company took care of this in a self-evident manner. In order to satisfy a customer, they created a model that can be universally placed wherever you want. First of all, the door drops down and this means that you can place the box on top of your table, a narrow shelf or in the wall niche. Moreover, it comes with hanging eyes on the back, allowing its installation on a wall. Easy and simple, right?

But what we really liked is that it has a flat surface on top of it that works as an additional shelf, when you need it. You can decorate it with jars, put a toy or just salts and peppers on top – it looks good with anything!

So you can rest assured that it's a great and safe material for storing your food in there. The manufacturer provides a 10-year warranty for this model. And this is the hint, that it may serve much longer than that. The metallic matte finish on steel keeps no trace of fingerprints and can be cleaned with or without any detergent. It looks very stylish, making this model a great decorating element in any kitchen.

Finally, it has vent holes, so your bakery will stay fresher and softer for a longer period than it would do in a plastic bag or in a fridge.

Longstanding Design

Before people invented fridges, they had to use some other means to store their food away: they looked for colder places, digged cellars or simple pits in the ground, and put their products in there. In summer 2016, a man has found more than a 2000-year old hunk of butter from 12 feet under the ground in Ireland. And the butter was still edible! As for the bread, people enveloped it with a linen cloth or rolled it in a piece paper to keep it fresh. The bread has two main enemies: mold deterioration and bread stalling. The mold appears in a highly humid environment, while stalling occurs when the bread dries out. Therefore, people came up with the idea to keep all bakery in a ventilated place with a low humidity level. This provided additional 2-3 days for bread to stay soft enough to be eaten. Wooden bins and boxes became such storage.

Up to this day, wooden bread boxes have not lost their popularity. It’s one of the most ecological material with a pretty-to-look-at pattern. That’s why when we've come across this bread box by Mountain Woods, we've decided that it would be a great representative of its class. The rattan patch on the drop-down lid permits the air in that is so necessary for ventilation. And under a bit closer investigation, we saw that the lacquer layer is not too thick, allowing the wood to 'breathe' as well. This is necessary for the wood not to crack over time. But if you notice the water condensed inside, let it dry out a bit, opening the lid. We can easily state that the bread will stay fresh for a couple of days in this box just fine.

In Favor of Wood

As we’ve just said, the lumber is the most ecological material. And a wooden bread box will be appropriate almost in any kitchen. However, this is a common fact that wood quickly absorbs liquids and smells. Therefore, if you spill some soda or jam on it, it may leave stain that won’t come off with time. It might also not be the best choice for cookhouses or restaurants, where the chemicals from detergents, steam from the ovens and temperature changes can destroy its wooden body. Still, it’s pretty safe and reliable material for normal kitchens. Just brush out breadcrumbs once a week, don’t put hot fresh bread in there to prevent condensation and you will be fine. You may also clean the insides with a cloth retted in vinegar to prevent molding. That’s probably all the rules you need to know. If you follow them, your box will serve you for an aeon.

Add Warmth to Your Design

Summing up, if you value wooden items and wish to add coziness to your kitchen room, this bread box might be the best bet for you. It is stylish, built with quality in mind, and doesn't take up much space, giving you enough options where to put it. Plus, it has a handy flat top so you can get the most out of it by using it as an additional shelf for smaller items.

Storing Breadstuff

If you haven't got a bread box yet or you plan to go on a picnic, there are some tips you may be interested in to expand the shelf life of breadstuff. At home, you can store it away in the fridge. If it’s a plastic bag, then seal it hermetically. If you've already kept bread in the fridge and taken it out, don't put it there again - somehow it makes it dry out faster. When used out of the fridge it's advised to make a few holes in a bag to enable better ventilation as well as to keep it away from the direct sunlight. A piece of paper proved to be the best package material. That’s why bread loafs are usually sold in paper bags. It doesn't let it get dampen but allows "breathing". There is another approach which units several ways to store bread - you can put a loaf in a plastic box without taking it out of a paper bag. This way you'll add another day of shelf life and your breadstuff won't dry out so soon.

  • 2-3 average sized overripened bananas
  • 2 eggs
  • 60 grams of butter or margarine
  • 1 cup of blenderized oatmeal or 1.5 cup of flour
  • 1 flat teaspoon of baking soda
  • 0.7 cup of crushed walnut
  • 1 flat teaspoon of powdered cinnamon
  • Optionally: raisins or chocolate chips at your discretion.

Turn on the oven at 360 degrees.

Cream together butter and eggs. Stir bananas, sift flour, baking soda, cinnamon - mix with the cream. Add crushed walnuts. At this point, you may blend in chocolate chips or add raisins if you like them more. Mix them till they are spread more or less evenly.

Grab a baking mold or other baking dish. The bananas should actually serve as a natural grease, but just in case you might want to grease a mold very lightly. Pour the mass into the dish, put it in a preheated oven and bake for 40-50 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center of a loaf comes out clean.

After that, take it out and let it cool down. Serve buns with a glass of milk or store in a bread bin. And we guarantee you'll love it. We surely did.

It might be not so easy to select a perfect breadbox for your needs, and sometimes it is only a pretty design that makes your decision. However, there are other important parameters that should be considered as well, such as your chosen model capacity and usability.

What Is a Bread Box?

Bread is probably the most popular food in many countries. A lot of us are used to eating it daily, and only a few are brave enough to deny themselves a joy of breadstuffs. As you know, the fresh bread is the best bread. However, after taking it home from a grocery store, people often keep it in plastic bags on kitchen shelves or even in the fridge just to keep it soft. But only those of us, who has bread boxes, can boast that our bakery stays fresh longer. There’s no need for a sophisticated description of what bread boxes are – humanity used such things for millennia. It’s a container with a cover to keep the bread loaf in. But in the last few centuries, the kitchen transformed from a room for cooking, into a place where art is made.

Therefore, we are proud to show you our pick of 5 bread boxes that will satisfy any hunger for beautiful and practical kitchenware. And if you love baking yourself, take a sneak peek at our bread makers and bread pans reviews.

What Features to Compare

Materials

It turns out that a bread box material has a direct connection with how long bread stays fresh, flavorful and soft, and affects the service life of a bread box as well. Commonly bread boxes can be made either of wood, plastic, steel, ceramic, glass or their combinations. Let's see how they compare and differ.

Wooden boxes have been used since prehistoric times. They are eco-friendly and usually have an aesthetically-pleasing look, adding a special zest to the kitchen interior. The downside of wooden bread boxes is that because they quickly absorb moisture and smells you'd need to clean them more often to prevent bacteria growth. In this regard, bread boxes made of stainless steel are a much better option. They are more durable and they do not absorb wet, making it possible to preserve bread longer without worrying that it might start to mold. Additionally, stainless steel is easy to maintain clean. Usually, it's enough to simply wipe it with a cloth to get rid of fingerprint marks. Plastic bread boxes are a cheaper alternative that can serve you for years to come given that you treat it with care. Boxes made of ceramics and glass are usually the prettiest, but also the heaviest and can be easily damaged if treated without care.

Size and Lid

The next step in choosing a bread box is to decide on the size of the box that will be right for you. How many people are there in your family and where do you want to put a bread box? If you've got enough space in your kitchen, you can easily choose a functional model with multiple compartments. These are a great option for large households that usually stock up on bread. However, if you don't eat much bread and there are only two or three people in your family, you can opt for a moderately-sized box easily. It will be more than enough for most average needs. Additionally, check out a bread box lid. There are many different types available. Some may come with special vent holes for letting the air in, others are solid and can double as a cutting board. Other types include find drop-down and sliding doors. Which one to choose totally depends on where you plan to place a bread box and how many broad loaves you want to keep.

Features

There are always details making different bread boxes more convenient over the others. It’s important that a lid seals the box tightly – so check out if it has magnets. Handles are also a welcome addition if you want to open it with ease. To prevent molding, check out if the container has ventilation holes. And if you don’t have a lot of free space on the table or shelves, check out if it can be hinged to a wall. A removable lid in bread bins sometimes can be used as a cutting board. And the boxes with a flat top surface can also be used as a shelf for storing some kitchen utensils or decoration stuff.
